BELLY:
Tanya Donnelly started Belly in 1991 after being in Throwing Muses with her step-sister, Kirsten Hersh, and an earlier version of the Breeders with Kim Deal. The sound was alternative with ith a heavy pop-laden influence. The first album, Star, contained the college-radio heavy rotation song, Feed the Tree. Gail Greenwood joined the band when original bassist Fred Abong left. Greenwood's sound pushed Belly to a more rock sound. They released a second album, King, that reflected Greenwood's influence but it failed to have the same kind of success as Star. In 1997 Donnelly broke up Belly to pursue her own solo career.
Here is Belly on The Letterman Show back in 1993 performing Feed the Tree.

My Trusted MOGs
Tanya and Belly did my favourite ever Gram Parsons cover - Hot Burrito No 1 (or I'm Your Toy, as it's known to some). She also did a bitchin' version of a Jungle Book song, I've been told, but I'm not sure which.

To me, Gail Greenwood killed Belly. They were so much better before her.

i agree dale. i adored the more atmospheric aspects of Belly. Here solo stuff continues where Star left off.
One of my favorite songs of all-time is Pretty Deep by Tanya Donelly off of Love Songs for Underdogs.

I've only heard King, which I picked up not long ago...but I like it.

Dang...Tonya Donnelly was cute.
Saw them at a KROQ Acoustic Christmas, they were awesome. I think I saw them somewhere else, too. Awesome. And I saw them on TV whenever I could. Awesome.
As far as I've known, though, she's dropped off the face.

Your ARE watching "The Alternative" Aren't you? It's why TiVo was created!
I saw them at First Avenue in Minneapolis. Catherine Wheel opened. It was friggin awesome. I wanted to pick up a geetarr and ROCK! I liked it when they sounded 'swirly." A lot of bands at the time had that sound. Like the sound surrounded you like a dust devil and made you feel a little woozy. Or it coulda been the booze.
Brian had a terrible crush on the lovely Tanya. She and her step sister are some rockin' mamas!
