"Fight Like Apes" are a quartet from Dublin. Honestly very little is known about them because they are at that beautiful stage of their career where we can only know what they let us know. i.e their myspace page www.myspace.com/fightlikeapesmusicCheck out the page cos its a very entertaining read!! So I finally got to see "Fight Like Apes" play live last Thursday night in the Roisin Dubh (pronounced "row-sheen dove" and means Black Rose in Irish). Its becoming a really great venue and they are picking some really great bands as of late. Tonight it is "Rulers Of the Planet", a Cork based heavy rock/metal band band who are the main act and that is really obvious by looking around at the crowd. All metal/rawk kids with incredibly trendy haircuts and downbeat aggresive attitudes. At this point I got a little worried for one simple reason, "F.L.A" are an incredibly poppy group with a leaning towards electro rather than metal. They sample many movie dialogues in their songs and it all seems a little cheesy but in a beautifully catchy & tongue in cheek way!! They take to the stage to a half filled room as it is a free gig tonight and most of the stragglers dont turn up anyways till late. They kick into their set regardless and it seems at the start that they are losing the crowd or maybe its just the wrong crowd, Even I was worried about my mate I went with. I had been harping on about these guys for months and when I looked at him he had a look of confusion on his face!! Luckily it wasnt confusion, but a look of wonderment, the same way a child would look at something new for the very first time knowing that it was going to be incredible. A few songs in and they have the crowd in their hands. They play a song called "Jake Summers" a song about an American gay porn star?? And the crowd are loving it. Metal kids and trendy's alike are dancing around, not moshing but dancing!! Everyone is happy and laughing and smiling like complete fools for the rest of the set. Even old fogies like me were dancing around with pretty young girls and hairy young men who should really know better. There was not one person standing still in the room including the bar staff!! They closed the set with their top song! The one thats getting everyone in a tizzy over here and getting them such recognition "Lend Me Your Face". A boisterous dancealong song about a boy who wronged the lead singer in some way!! The lyircs are almost childlike in their deviousness and when its all over we are left crying out for more. I didnt even stay for the main act. Why bother if there was any chance that this feeling of pure euphoria could be taken away by another single note
