Thanks for the post, you made me remember a lovely coincidence...
There's a prominent artist/musician/Flying Nun (record label) honcho/writer where I live who is known for his individual style of drawing and caricature.
I was rifling through the cassette bins of a second-hand store, in a rather seedy part of my town, when I hit gold. I found two original Verlaines cassettes (great Flying Nun band from the 80s-early 90s) and two compilation tapes with very _particular_ looking caricatures of Nina Simone and the Everly Brothers on them.
I later interviewed the musician, and after the cameras were off - asked him about my discovery. They were his, alright. Great mixes.
Best 50c I've ever spent :)

Very much still around.
They got Stephen Malkmus to come over and record a Verlaines cover for their last anniversary disk (but that was awhile ago). Ongoing friends with Merge, still.

sometimes its hard to tell what a tape is going to be at a secondhand store. i like to dig through them, but i havent had any really good finds like the ones you mentioned. maybe we should start a store that only sold other people's mix tapes. no track lists you pay 50 cents and its a crap shoot everytime. tapes could be numbered so after you listened to it you could get a track list from a database or something, but this would add to the excitement because you would never know what you were getting.
