Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain

Lightning Bolt out Boredoms the fucking Boredoms. Seriously, the Boredoms may have pioneered the art of noisy riff played over and over rapidly, but Lightning Bolt takes it even farther. Hypermagic Mountain is a headache on speed, like banging your head against a wall at 200 bpm, and I mean this in the most positive of ways. “Riffwraith,†the name of a track on the album, may be the perfect way to describe the album. The problem with Hypermagic Mountain is it gets repetitive, after awhile it is very difficult to distinguish tracks from one another. The album closes strong, with the excessive Van Halen-esque solo of “Bizarro Bike,†the ambient “Infinity Farm,†and the strange tape effects of “No Rest for the Obsessed.†The problem with the CD era of music is musicians feel obligated to extend albums past when they are enjoyable, Hypermagic Mountain falls into the CD trap. 13/20
