Lightning Bolt out Boredoms the fucking Boredoms. Seriously, the Boredoms may have pioneered the art of noisy riff played over and over rapidly, but Lightning Bolt takes it even farther. Hypermagic Mountain is a headache on speed, like banging your head against a wall at 200 bpm, and I mean this in the most positive of ways. “Riffwraith,” the name of a track on the album, may be the perfect way to describe the album. The problem with Hypermagic Mountain is it gets repetitive, after awhile it is very difficult to distinguish tracks from one another. The album closes strong, with the excessive Van Halen-esque solo of “Bizarro Bike,” the ambient “Infinity Farm,” and the strange tape effects of “No Rest for the Obsessed.” The problem with the CD era of music is musicians feel obligated to extend albums past when they are enjoyable, Hypermagic Mountain falls into the CD trap. 13/20

I only did this review so I could type Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements multiple times

Stereolab is one of the few bands in existence that crafted their own unique sound, combining influences as diverse as 60’s lounge pop, Krautrock, and French existentialism. Stereolab’s first major label release, Transient Random Noise Bursts with Announcements sounds exactly like a Stereolab album. This is not to say the album is easy or derivative. Transient seems like a transitional album from their earlier, nosier work like Peng! and their later, more varied work. On rateyourmusic.com, this album has the highest rating (albeit with far fewer reviews than Emperor Tomato Ketchup). As a fan of their more poppy, sound, I cannot say this record is my favorite. The album lacks a great song like “Ping Pong”, “Miss Modular”, or “Cybele’s Reverie.” Certainly, as with any Stereolab release, there are nuggets of pop. Pack Yr Romantic Mind and the first half of Jenny Ondioline are both great tracks. I find “Pause” and “Golden Ball” quite boring and pointless. I would not recommend this as a good starting point for those interested in Stereolab, but in no way is Transient a weak record. A step below Emperor Tomato Ketchup and Mars Audiac Quintet. 7.5/10

Favorite Tracks: Our Trinitone Blast, Pack Yr Romantic Mind, the first half of Jenny Ondioline, I’m Going Out of My Way

Great opening post - welcome aboard! I love the album title, but the music is a little too atmospheric to do much for me. And something about the singer seems a bit gender issues creepy.
