" Giving Me Wings" -The Frames

The year 2000, and the old tape player in the corner of my course mates kitchen played out the soundtrack to our student days.

On the b side of one of the old TDK C90 tapes that hadn't been chewed up, scrawled in blue biro, I could just make out the words "The Frames". I popped it in, pressed play and fell in love with what I heard.

A few weeks later, in the intimate surroundings of The Blues Bar Harrogate, UK, I heard the band play live for the first time. That gig is still in my top 10 of all time, along with four other Frames gigs!

During that performance they road tested songs for their next studio session which was to become "For The Birds", it was a privilege to be there.

"Giving me Wings" is a song I return to again and again from this, my favourite Frames album to date.

A doting melody floats beautifully over delicate guitars, distant drums and the dreamlike drone of the squeeze box.

Glen Hansard has a fantastic way with words. His use of imagery in the lines

"When nothing's feeling right….I'll show you how you can sellotape it on"

And "You're giving me wings, so I can carry on "

portray the strength and support two people can give each other in difficult times.

"Giving Me Wings" is a hidden gem in the Frame's back catalogue, which may be hard to find amongst all the other gems that it contains!

So go download it from itunes now or borrow your mates copy on C90! A good advert for music piracy… I now have all the Frames albums, the tshirt, the mouse mat etc etc all paid for and all worth every penny!
