" Gods Gonna Cut You Down" - Johnny Cash
In the twilight of his recording career, and not long before his passing, The "Man in Black" committed to tape a truly brilliant and moving version of this old traditional folk song.
Odetta, The Blind Boys of Alabama and even Elvis had all gone before in recording their own versions of "God’s Gonna Cut You Down" sometimes known as "Run on", a great testament to the tune itself.
But still Cash managed to bring a magic all of his own to the song.
His voice had possibly never sounded better, possessing a quality and tone that maybe only comes with age. His delivery, unique as always, ever so slightly weary yet full of conviction in the subject matter:
"Go tell that long tongue liar, / go and tell that midnight rider, / tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter, / tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down"
His backing band sound like a chain gang, God as their leader, on a mission to hunt down sinners. The stamp and clap relentless and unforgiving while sinister guitars slip and slide around the vocal.
Above all, when you hear Johnny Cash sing this song you can tell that he meant & believed every word of it. Thought provoking……..
