So I have not posted in quite a long time but I am hoping to remedy that with the addition of a laptop in my life. I apologize for the wait and look forward to hearing from everyone again.
Dear Science blew my fucking mind. Granted it may have had something to do with the fantastic weed I was smoking at the time of first listen but after the 9th full listen I seriously doubt it. It starts off, as it should, running with halfway home, the head bobbing hand claps are melted into a radioheadesque loopfest that makes me want to dance my pants off.
The album hits moments of James Brown, Beck, Funkadelic, and The Talking Heads just to name a few, mixing them together with a soulful flavor that reeks instant classic excellent follow-up to cookie moutntain and i look forward to seeing them when they come through chicago Oct 24th at The Riv.
Stay tuned because next week i will be reviewing Death Magnetic
Welcome again to another edition of thecokehyena’s monthly herald. Today’s music comes from none other than the original hippy. Willie Nelson. Songbird, his latest release, is one dynamite record. Backed by Ryan Adams’ Cardinals and produced by Ryan himself, Willie is back rockin’ again. Is the reason that I bought another Willie album because he got caught smoking pot? Yes, in fact every time he gets caught smoking I buy another album. Do you know why? That man has done more for the family farmer in his lifetime than any single American has done in the history of time. The man does nothing but help these people who constantly struggle to keep crops up and keep us fed. They want to bust him for smoking pot and try to arrest him for it? Fuck that, by the way Farm Aid is a good cause and if you get a chance throw them some dough. Alright no more preaching, the album as a whole is a great straight through listen that I will do till the day I die. Willie and his signature behind the beat singing style adds a new twist to some covers that he does on this album.
Stand out tracks on this record are plentiful. The first of a few I will mention is my personal favorite, The Grateful Dead’s, Stella Blue. Some may say that this sounds too much like Ryan Adams, I disagree, I think it does sound like Ryan Adams a little, but the majority of what I hear comes from The Velvet Underground. The eerie sounding chords, and minor vocals that Willie adds make this a new take on a fabulous Dead tune. Steel guitars and harmonica add that country twang to just about every track, but they don’t ram it down your throat like the popular country of today.
The next track id like to mention is Gram Parsons’ “$1000 Wedding I cannot say enough about this song. It is catchy, fun, powerful, and humble all at the same time. That Cardinal’s style of heavy reverb guitar makes this sound so friendly. The song makes you feel so warm, I wish it came out 35 years ago so I could listen to the old vinyl LP, which nobody has heard of.
The last song I will talk about is Amazing Grace. Done in the style of The Blind Boys From Alabama, the eerie minor tone makes this song stand out for sure above the rest. The chord progression is the pretty much the same as The House Of The Rising Sun, just to give a mental overtone for all you people who haven’t heard it. Again Willie’s signature sound makes you really listen to the song again. I mean I have heard this song and sang it probably 70 or 80 times in my life so when you hear it sounding different than something you have hear before you tend to pay more attention to detail. Now do I like TBBOA version better? Yes. Why? They’re black. Yes they are black and therefore automatically have more soul than anyone. Their version is a lot more powerful, dismal, and heartfelt.
So in conclusion this album is definitely not just for Willie fans alone. In fact if you have never heard a single Willie Nelson song I would give this album a try it may turn you to the dark side.
So I just returned home from a spur of the moment decision to see a free show at the Empty Bottle.
Nicodemus Agency Showcase featuring:
Headlights label: Polyvinyl Canada label: Quite Scientific Skeletons & The Girl Faced Boys label: Shinkoyo, Ghostly The Beauty Shop label: Snapper/Believe Caleb Engstrom label: Right Place
Now, I missed the first two bands (Caleb Engstrom and Canada) completely and most of Skeletons. They were alright, I guess, not my cup of tea. The pacing was very boring, the bass tone didn't wow me, the drummer was pretty good, and as for the guitars, had the bass not been so overfuckingwhelmingly loud, I might have really got to hear them but alas. At the end the lead singer/bass player busted out a saxophone but left his bass feeding back. That was the nail in the coffin for between this band, and me right then I stopped liking them.
The Beauty Shop was better, much better in fact. The Best Part about their set was it got better as it went along as well. When they started off I thought I was going to be listening to some dude who plays his acoustic guitar in his dorm and at some point someone told him he was good. They started off slow but as the set went on the songs were catchier and catchier. Good tones all around, the songs were head bobbers for the most part, but I really thought they were missing something Being a three piece (drums, bass, acoustic) I really felt they could have used some keys possible an electric guitar. Dance it up a little; possibly some vocal harmonies and these guys will really have something. I stole a sticker, sue me.
...And for the main event, Headlights, an amazing three piece that was just begging to be seen by anyone with a musical bone in their body. Tristan Wraight, Erin Fein, and Brett Sanderson put forth dance-y, catch-y, wave of sound that I have not had the pleasure of hearing live in quite a while. Being a spur of the moment free thing to do I wasn't expecting much from a headlining act on a Monday night, but I was pleasantly proved wrong. The vocal harmonies remind you of a Mates Of State meets Yo La Tengo kind of thing. But the trippy guitar parts, squealing through the melody of the keys really made it for me. All three of them are extremely good musicians as far as I can tell, playing every song almost effortlessly. Make sure you get out and see this band at the smaller venues as I can foresee their career taking off within the next year.

yes, an excellent album, I believe the collaboration between Willie and Ryan works very well...I'd like to see more of them playing together
