music to get you through jury duty

Posted over 5 years ago
Today I had to go back to the courthouse for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounds of jury selection. We had to wait in the hall for about 90 minutes before being called into the courtroom. Not wanting to repeat last week's mistake I brought my iPod with me. I happily chose a playlist that has gotten me through many a rough patch over the (dare I say) decades. My David Cassidy/P-Fam playlist immediately took me to my "happy place," and I found it a challenge NOT to sing along or play air guitar/bass/drums/tambourine/harpsicord, for fear I'd draw unwanted attention to myself from the others in the jury pool. I am so totally loving my Sony earbuds, because with them I hear every little detail, and even now I catch stuff in each song I never heard before; a bit of harmony or nuance in the arrangement which I just don't get the sad, sad stereo speakers in my rickety Honda Civic. I can't explain the way all those teenybopper emotions come flooding back I hear this music; I will NEVER get tired of it. It's definitely on my short list. At the risk of sounding like a K-Tel commercial, some of the songs I truly love are "Together We're Better," (on our own we're fine but united, we're dynamite), "One Night Stand" (a chocolate bar, and there you are, the price of fame), "It's One of Those Nights," (for some reason the back up vocals just crack me up.)For a change of pace I switched over to the Original Broadway Cast recording of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." I took my mom to see it at that Pantages about a week ago & thought I'd try reliving it in my mind. I sure did enjoy Tom Hewitt's performance (in the John Lithgow role), and we were thrilled to see Norbert Leo Butz in his Tony Award winning role as "Freddie Benson." Again, my earbuds afforded me access to lyrics & background detail that wasn't quite audible during the live show. The psuedo power rock love anthem, "My Love is My Legs" (love is my legs, and you are my love, so you are my legs, my love) has a hysterical background lyric which even after several listens I only just got today: "the leg bone's connected to the ankle bone connected to the foot bone of love..." or something to that affect. I think I laughed out loud, which startled out of a stupor the potential juror seated next to me.Check out the album, not only for the obvious hits like "Here I Am," (my favorite) and "Great Big Stuff," but for the clever wordplay in "Chimp in a Suit," "Like Zis, Like Zat," and the song that can't be any more disgusting unless you're watching it live, "All About Ruprecht." Brilliant.
