  2. theShephard says Yeah, sorry 'bout that - thought my trailing dots would arouse curiosity. jk. ;D Actually, it was late - brain was kinda mushy. So yeah, I had never heard of Jaco Pastorius either. I mean, who the hell, right? He just gets DOWN on the bass. Not like Flea.. maybe closer to Sandman's (Morphine) bass style, but with a jazzy 'sophistication', much more technical skill, and an energy level and clarity not at all associated with opiates. Really, nothing like Morphine, but just wanted to say that we're not dealing with the da funk. Anyway, see if you can get your paws on a track entitled "Kuru / Speak Like a Child", turn it up, and imagine listening to the masterful manipulation of a fretless bass, the cyclonic, nervous violins, and that bongo live in a dark club. I think every witness would go apeshit from the energy. It really is great stuff. Another piece he's got, "Portrait of Tracy," just feels very American, urban, blue-grey concrete, and human. In "Opus Pocus", about two minutes in, you'll hear his thumping bass, a steel drum, and just this INSANE sop sax(?) that tells you where to go and why. Again, I'm not the biggest jazz aficionado. Gotta have the right set and setting, and the genre is really something that must be experienced live (and I'm not thinking of you, Mr. I-just-learned-how-to-play-a-xylophone-and-got-this-hotel-lounge-gig), rather than listened to on the stereo. I'm blown away by this guy's expression with his instrument, and it reminds me that good jazz comes in so many flavors - it's such a diverse, creative, and fascinating genre.
