Metric in Scottsdale, Az

After performing in Tempe, Az nearly two years ago, Metric came back to the Phoenix valley. Scottsdale's Martini Ranch was the venue for their 2007 Az stop.
This show was a little different from a typical concert, though.
According to Metric's official forum, the band decided to try out some new songs on their west coast dates. Quoting Metric's MySpace page: "We decided to book some smaller shows so we can try out some of the new songs and have some fun in the spring with our favorite west coast kids."
That said, it was a different kind of show for me. I'm not used to being unfamiliar with a large chunk of a band's set list. Nonetheless, Metric put on a great show!
They rocked through their familiar songs with the kind of swagger expected of Metric. The front three bounced and rocked about to heavy bass lines and solid drumming (particularly on the cymbals, accenting many of Metric's upbeat songs).
I didn't recognize almost half of the songs. The band closed their first set with an extended version of 'Rock Me Now,' the only song I recognized from 2007's Grow Up and Blow Away release.
The Set List included Poster Of A Girl, Dead Disco, Empty, Hustle Rose, Combat Baby!, Handshakes, Rock Me Now, and Monster Hospital.

Arctic Monkeys in Tempe, Arizona

Nathan and I went to see the Arctic Monkeys in Tempe's Marquee Theatre on Friday night. I had seen them just last week at Austin City Limits but wanted to see them headline a club show.
While the set list was about the same, the band was much more active on stage. The burned through their songs at a grueling pace. The show ended at 10:30pm, just under 90 intense minutes.
The band played all their hits in addition to one new song, which sounded great! Once again, the Arctic Monkeys represented well live. They showed how they can duplicate everything they do on their album tracks in a live setting with just four people. I also enjoyed the Arctic Monkeys club experience much more than the stadium one.
Set list: This House Is A Circus, Brianstorm, Still Take You Home, Dancing Shoes, From The Ritz To The Rubble, Fake Tales Of San Francisco, Balaclava, Old Yellow Bricks, I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, Florescent Adolescent, Teddy Picker, D Is For Dangerous, ?New Song?, Do Me A Favour, If You Were There Beware, The View From The Afternoon, Leave Before The Lights Come On, When The Sun Goes Down, A Certain Romance

Alice in Chains and Velvet Revolver in Phoenix, Az

Steve and I went to see Alice in Chains and Velvet Revolver at the Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix this past Tuesday. Counting Austin City Limits, this was our sixth day in a row of live music. The venue didn't sell out (Smashing Pumpkins was also in town that night), so our lawn seats were upgraded to 300 level seating. We were happy to have seats, as we were running low on energy.
As the opener, Alice in Chains came out and played about an hour of greatest hits type songs. No surprises. They sounded OK, but the band 's performance is best suited for a club atmosphere rather than a seated one. I thought this alone held them back, though our entire section seemed to love the performance. (set list below)
After AIC, VR took their time coming out (45 min). They played an equal share of new and old songs, accompanied by more STP and GNR songs than in their initial tour. They put on a good show. The crowd reacted well to most songs. However, a good number of fans were clearly in attendance for AIC and were not as enthusiastic for the main act.
A great night of Rock and Roll none-the-less!
Alice In Chains set list: Again, Grind, We Die Young, Them Bones, Damn That River, Rain When I Die, Down In A Hole, No Excuses, Angry Chair, Man In The Box, Would?, Rooster.
Velvet Revolver set list: Let It Roll, She Mine, Sucker Train Blues, Do It For The Kids, Superhuman, Big Machine, Vasoline, The Last Fight, Interstate Love Song, Patience, Gravedancer, It's So Easy, Get Out The Door, Fall To Pieces, She Builds Quick Machines, (Slash jam), Set Me Free, Mr. Brownstone, Sex Type Thing, Wish You Were Here, Slither.

Guster in Tempe, Az

On Monday, September 17th, Guster played the Marquee Theatre at the north end of Tempe Arizona's Mill Avenue. I get the impression that Guster was not met by large crowds at their previous Arizona shows. This was different. While the venue did not sell out completely (well, it did on Ticketmaster), a few hundred loud and enthusiastic fans were in attendance. Guster seemed pleased with the good turnout and vowed to return again for their 'annual Guster show' next year.
As to be expected with the seasoned group, Guster was tight and sounded great on their songs. Each band member was constantly switching between guitar, bass, and keys on both electric and acoustic songs. Brian, who also played a traditional drum set, looked like a madman behind his percussion setup.
Prior to 'Either Way, Ryan explained how the group pitched the song to the Backstreet Boys as a song to cover, but were turned down. During the song, Ryan proceeded to do 'dance moves' with Adam. The group performed a great live version of 'Come Downstairs..' and a disco-like version of 'The Airport Song.' The band closed with 'Homecoming King' (which they wanred they might not play again if it didn't sound good) and a great live version of 'Happier.'
Set list: What You Wish For, The Captain, Backyard, Satellite, Red Oyster Colt, Either Way, Come Downstairs and Say Hello, One Man Wrecking Machine, Amsterdam, Manifest Destiny, G Major, Airport Song, Ruby Falls, C'mon, Demons, Fa Fa.
Encore: Empire State, Homecoming King, Happier.

Arctic Monkeys at Austin City Limits

The Arctic Monkeys played ACL's AMD stage towards the end of day 2. The band was very tight and played through their best and most popular songs. However, the group was not as animate on stage as I would have expected from a young, three-chord punk style band (though the drummer looked like he earned his paycheck a few times over).
That said, their songs were still tight, fast, and catchy. The crowd seemed to agree.
Set list: Vampires / This House is a Circus, Brianstorm
Still Take You Home, Dancing Shoes, From the Ritz to the Rubble, Fake Tales of San Francisco, Old Yellow Bricks, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, Flourescent Adolescent, Teddy Picker, If You Were There Beware, The View from the Afternoon, When the Sun Goes Down, A Certain Romance.

Spoon and Sound Team at La Zona Rosa

Austin natives Spoon and Sound Team played an after show (which was really a prequel) on the Thursday before Day one of the Austin City Limits music festival. Downtown Austin's La Zona Rosa held over 100 people for a sold out show.
Sound Team, which reportedly played their final show ever days later at ACL, played a great set. I was unfamiliar with them walking in, but they carried themselves very well on stage. They banged out several catchy, bass-driven tunes before introducing Spoon.
Spoon came out almost an hour later than advertised and jumped right into several songs from 2007's 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.' The band seemed polished and confident, performing their songs to a T while throwing in several live improvs and accents. However, I thought their set list choice lacked the variety in their studio catalog.
The set list included Japanese Cigarette Case, Don't You Evah, Rhythm and Soul, You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb, Ghost of Your Lingers, Don't Make Me A Target and Underdog. The set list was noticeably low on tracks from 'Girls Can Tell' (after leaving about an hour through the set list, none had been played).

LCD Soundsystem at Austin City Limits

LCD Soundsystem played ACL's AT&T Blueroom stage on Day 1 of the festival. The entire band was very tight despite playing in the height of the day's 90+ heat.
James amused the crowd between songs with his typical on-stage humor. He enjoyed performing on the ATT stage, rocking out with 'five bars' of reception. There was a strong crowd response to many songs from their setlist, including 'Daft Punk...', a great live performance of 'All My Friends', and a base-heavy version of 'Tribulations.'
Set list: Us vs. Them, Daft Punk's Playing At My House, Time to Get Away, North American Scum, All My Friends, Get Innocuous, Tribulations, Movement, Yeah.

The Arcade Fire at Austin City Limits

The Arcade Fire were one of two headliners for ACL day 2 and their performance lived up to the billing. The band opened with a thunderous version of 'Black Mirror', the opening track on the new CD. Many of the band's songs were converted to melodies as songs transitioned nicely into each other without a pause. Extended versions of 'Tunnels', 'Power Out', and 'Rebellion' closed out the initial set before AF came out for an ACL rarity: an encore.
This was my first time seeing the band and they certainly impressed. Everyone on the stage (10+ band members) were animated; jumping and throwing items around. They sounded great (despite being quite far back in an open air venue).
Setlist: Black Mirror, Keep the Car Running, Laika, No Cars Go, Haiti, Intervention, Antichrist TV Blues, My Body Is A Cage, Windowsill, The Well and The Lighthouse, Ocean of Noise, Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels), Neigborhood #3 (Power Out), Rebellion (Lies). Encore: Wake Up.

How Is The MOG Meter Calculated?

Does anyone know how user ratings for the MOG Meter are calculated? Is it based on activity? Content? Just curious.

Hinder, Papa Roach, Buckcherry and the Exies in Mesa, Arizona

Tuesday night, I went to see Hinder, Papa Roach, Buckcherry, and The Exies in Mesa, Az. The tour has been dubbed the Bad Boys of Rock tour. The weather may have kept some fans away from the arena; there were violent thunderstorms just a few miles north. There were only a few hundred people, well under the Mesa Art Center's capacity.
Unfortunately, we missed the Exies and most of Buckcherry. We did catch Buckcherry's single CrazyB*tch, in which they went into Billy Squier's 'The Stroke' during the middle of the song. A nice touch.
After BuckCherry, Papa Roach came out with their bass-heavy, rap-rock style. They played all of their hits and carried themselves well on stage. While the singer was a good band leader, he did not know when to put the mic down and step aside when he was done.
Hinder came on last. Hinder is on the second tour with only their debut album out. They switched up the song order a bit, but only had two new songs (one from their next album, one that didn't make the cut from their last) and a cover (Born to be Wild, performed with Papa Roach) to add to their set-list. The singers voice was drowned out in most songs, even the slower ones.
Overall, the bands were entertaining on stage. I don't have setlists, but each band was kept to about 10 - 15 songs (sticking to their staple tracks). The songs were catchy and rebellious. I look forward to seeing these bands mature.
Keep and eye out for more updates in September... eight shows in nine days...

Migrating Back To Mog, In Phoenix

After six months, I'm happy to say I'm beginning to transition back to Mog. I gave up on MySpace and didn't find another social network I like as much as here. As many other on this site, music is my first love. Mog just makes sense.

I'm always looking for new music, mostly in the indie rock genre.

I'm also a little frustrated with the music scene here in Phoenix. Not many bands stop here. Any suggestions would be great!

I must be honest, I'm not going to 'blog' here.
I am into alternative and indie rock. As you can see from the list on the left, 90's rock is my mainstay. I am fairly open, though. Send me a message if you think we'd get along, I don't know many people in Arizona.
