Alice in Chains and Velvet Revolver in Phoenix, Az

Posted over 4 years ago
Steve and I went to see Alice in Chains and Velvet Revolver at the Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix this past Tuesday. Counting Austin City Limits, this was our sixth day in a row of live music. The venue didn't sell out (Smashing Pumpkins was also in town that night), so our lawn seats were upgraded to 300 level seating. We were happy to have seats, as we were running low on energy.
As the opener, Alice in Chains came out and played about an hour of greatest hits type songs. No surprises. They sounded OK, but the band 's performance is best suited for a club atmosphere rather than a seated one. I thought this alone held them back, though our entire section seemed to love the performance. (set list below)
After AIC, VR took their time coming out (45 min). They played an equal share of new and old songs, accompanied by more STP and GNR songs than in their initial tour. They put on a good show. The crowd reacted well to most songs. However, a good number of fans were clearly in attendance for AIC and were not as enthusiastic for the main act.
A great night of Rock and Roll none-the-less!
Alice In Chains set list: Again, Grind, We Die Young, Them Bones, Damn That River, Rain When I Die, Down In A Hole, No Excuses, Angry Chair, Man In The Box, Would?, Rooster.
Velvet Revolver set list: Let It Roll, She Mine, Sucker Train Blues, Do It For The Kids, Superhuman, Big Machine, Vasoline, The Last Fight, Interstate Love Song, Patience, Gravedancer, It's So Easy, Get Out The Door, Fall To Pieces, She Builds Quick Machines, (Slash jam), Set Me Free, Mr. Brownstone, Sex Type Thing, Wish You Were Here, Slither.

  2. tgoas says Fakin - I think they great part about 'the New AIC' is that Eric Duval (the new singer) doesn't try to be like Stanely. Eric has his own voice and demeanor. This is one thing I noticed when seeing the new Alice in Chains the first time.
Eric Duval doesn't compare to Layne Stanely, I can't imagine anyone would expect him to. But Eric doesn't try to compare and does a good job filling in while being his own persona.
