Kickin it With No Hands

From their rope chains to their spare, bass-heavy beats, Chuck and Mikey bring a knowing wink to the style of Eighties heroes like Eric B and EPMD.

When the Cool Kids posted the video for their hypnotic, BMX-boosting track, "Black Mags," on their MySpace page this fall, they were hoping to do for bikes what Lupe Fiasco's "Kick Push" did for skateboards. "Not everybody can relate to skateboarding, because it's hard to do," says the retro-rap duo's Chuck, 23, who broke his ankle doing skater tricks last year. "But everybody rides bikes." Since "Black Mags" debuted, the Cool Kids have gone from an underground sensation in their native Chicago to the hottest ticket at New York's CMJ festival, where they played with A-trak (Kanye West's DJ) and wowed Warner Music Group CEO Lyor Cohen. "He offered me a beer and was like, 'Good shit,' " says Mikey, 19. "It doesn't get much better."

Chuck and Mikey have been lauded for their alt-B-boy fashion sense: brightly colored vinyl jackets, shell toes, hats and scarves. But Chuck was still flummoxed when a Chicago paper did a piece on them and their style. "The stuff I wear, I just wake up out of bed and put it on," he says. "Next thing you know, people are like, 'That's a cool sweater!' "

Feelin' Lucky?

The Story of 'Felt':
On tour back in 2001, Murs (Living Legends) and Slug (Atmosphere) were in a van driving from Eugene, OR to San Francisco, CA. Near Weed, CA on highway 5 South, there was a heated discussion over which rapper had the better chance of sleeping with Christina Ricci.
The argument lasted seventeen miles and continued while the van pulled off the road for gas and snacks. In the Shell station’s restroom, while in two separate stalls, Murs and Slug decided to make a record dedicated to Christina Ricci (with the hope of either Murs or Slug succeeding in having sex with her).
In 2002, Slug of Atmosphere and Murs of Living Legends met up in Los Angeles, CA to make good on the FELT idea with production by The Grouch (Living Legends, CMA and G&E). The album, recorded in a week and one day, was titled “Felt: A Tribute To Christina Ricci.”

With Christina Ricci’s career rejuvenated, and neither rapper having even meet her, Murs and Slug reunited in fall 2004 in Minneapolis with producer ANT (Atmosphere, Brother Ali, I Self Devine) to save yet another b-level actress- Lisa Bonet.
The first record was made in Los Angeles, but sounds more Minneapolis. This album was made in Minneapolis, but sounds more LA. It’s so good, they even made a comic book based on the album visually interpreting the songs by that guy Jim Mahfood who did the Clerks comic. The first single, Dirty Girl, has a b-side called Early Mornin’ Tony. The song sounds like some old school Ice T meets Schooly D shit.
Here it is:
Early Mornin' Tony

*lil fact-oid: According to Mr. Lif, his pseudonym comes from a song he heard at a Phish concert. As Lif recounts in an interview "They had this song, 'Liftedly Man', with this incredible bass line. I don't know what it was, but the character really got to me. I thought of him as the 'ultra you', someone that is perceptive, trying to gain knowledge of self, surroundings, and situations". Later some friends of his added the "Mister".

Kid Beyond promo-ing Ableton Live:

DJs and rappers have long sliced and diced other artists' melodies and beats into their own compositions. But San Francisco vocal percussionist Kid Beyond samples his own "beatbox" performances live: He unerringly mimics the sound of drums, violins and dozens more instruments... then, using a small set of foot pedals and a mike, records and plays back his uncanny sounds. Reminds me of Rahzel the Human Beatbox but is still pretty interesting. He will be playing at Coachella, on Sunday.

In 2001, after 28 years of blood, sweat and tears, the debut Braintax LP ‘Biro Funk’ was finished and released to critical acclaim. 14 tracks deep, it is a fresh, thoughtful, political record and features guest appearances from some of the UK's finest MCs, DJs and producers including SkinnyMan, Mystro, Task Force, Jehst, Shortee Blitz, Harry Love, Ben Grymm and Benny Live-O.

Braintax, now only consisting of Joseph Christie, has grown to be one of the most important and influential British hip hop artists of the second generation. He is founder (with Breaking the Illusion) and owner of Low Life Records, the longest running UK hip hop record label to consistently release records.

Here is a video w/ Dubbledge called 'Anti-Grey' from the LP 'Panorama':

It's time to loosen up that tie, grab your surfboard and fire up the camper van as Aspects and The Bees invite you on an excursion to Fistral Beach.

Aspects are vocalists El Eye (Ian Merchant) and Mantis (Ben Weaver), producer Specify (Ryan Jarrett) and beat-boxer Monkey Moo (Rory Donnelly). "With 'Off The Lip' we wanted to create the ultimate anti-work anthem," explains Mantis. "It's about living out your dreams as opposed to being stuck in a mundane job that you hate. The classic 'The Endless Summer' movies directed by Bruce Brown were a big inspiration, they're about these guys who travel the globe surfing, outrunning winter."

The video also includes pro-skateboarding action from legend Danny Wainwright and chums and 'hilarious' cameos from DJ Yoda, Nobsta Nuts and Slicer Man of the Headcase Ladz.

Wu-Tang and Friends: Unreleased brings to light previously unavailable music from within the Wu-Tang family. For over a decade, the Wu-Tang Clan has released countless classic hip-hop albums and sold over 40 million units. Whether together as a group or as individuals on solo albums, their mark upon the hip-hop landscape has been unforgettable. Inevitably, with a catalog this impressive there are always songs that get lost or remain unreleased, leaving a plethora of material behind and unavailable until now. "Wu-Tang and Friends: Unreleased," compiled and produced by the Wu-Tang Clan's DJ Mathematics, contains rare recordings, remixes and unreleased tracks, as well as outtakes from the cutting room floor that didn't make previous Wu-Tang albums. This album features Ghostface, Raekwon, GZA, Method Man, RZA, Masta Killa, U-God, Inspectah Deck, Killah Priest, Hell Razah, Shyhiem and many more! For fans of the Wu-Tang Clan and hip-hop as a whole, this album is a must have.

Conscious Living

Many may remember X-Clan as a significant, yet controversial representation in hip hop with the emergence of their 1990 debut album "To the East, Blackwards" which expressed its Afrocentrism and activism. Unfortunately, soon after the release of their second album "Xodus" in 1992, the group demobilized because of the decrease in commercial success and direction that hip hop was headed. After a lengthy intermission, X-Clan's reunion album "Return From Mecca" celebrates old and new school hip hop after approaching almost the fourteen year mark since separating.

Originally comprised of Brother J, Paradise the Architect, Sugar Shaft who passed from AIDS in 1995, and Professor X who unfortunately passed away in March of 2006 due to complications from spinal meningitis, X-Clan has come back with a vengeance with new additions to the clan in order to continue where they once left off.

The resurrection of X-Clan has come back with fierceness. Although Brother J takes control of the lyricism for most of the album, the variety of production and guest appearances makes the album even more appealing and provides some much needed variety in the midst of similar subject matter from track to track. The social consciousness and innovative, yet poignant lyricism is what X-Clan is known for and although hip hop has changed, these are issues that remain stagnant and need to be heard at any level. X-Clan provides a positive image and wisdom to any hip hop listener as we can all learn a thing or two. Let's just hope we don't have to wait another fourteen years to hear X-Clan again as it would be, once again, an unquestionable disappointment in hip hop.

Featuring guest appearances from the Blastmaster KRS One, Abstract Rude, DJ Quik, Damian “Junior Gong” Marley and Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, to name a few, Return From Mecca embodies the type of quality longtime Hip-Hop fans have come to expect.

The soundtrack for Afro Samurai is a refreshing change of pace from the average hip-hop album. While most artists today seems to be content choosing overpowering beats that club their listeners over the head with the strength of a two ton gorilla, RZA chooses a more refined and tactical approach. Not unlike a feudal samurai, RZA employs tact and subtlety to create a unique-sounding album that does not alienate long-term RZA fans. The RZA signatures are all here: creative samples and instruments, kung-fu voiceovers, and unique sound effects. This is not to say that RZA hasn’t grown. The record really does capture the essence of anime, while injecting some hip-hop flavor.

Afro Samurai also fits in nicely with Wu folklore. The anime series it soundtracks resembles the animated segments in Kill Bill (which, of course, RZA also scored), while its main character, dubbed Afro, is everything the Wu always wanted to be: stark and bloody, yet also strangely honorable.

Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of Afro Samurai is that it manages to cover so many musical bases (instrumentals, RnB, and nostalgic hip-hop infused with Asian influence) while still feeling as a coherent body of work. The guest appearances by the likes of Q-Tip, Talib Kweli and Big Daddy Kane aren’t gimmicky and instead contribute to the feel of the album. For any RZA fan, Afro Samurai is a worthy fresh appetizer to the upcoming Wu-Tang album.

“As a fan of martial arts and old Japanese samurai movies, I have always wanted to be a part of such creativity, and to have my own spice added is even better"
-The RZA

Short promo DVD for HIME, a female rapper from Hachioji (Tokyo).
She is signed to DJ Honda's label, "DJ Honda Recordings". She's extremely fine and super fly.

Starting around 1997, there has been lots of energetic activity in the underground hip hop scene centering in the West Tokyo area such as Hachioji, Machida, and Fussa. After grinding away at many guest performances and live shows in clubs, Hime, the First Lady of dj honda RECORDINGS is a fierce Japanese female emcee. In 2003, she dropped her long-awaited debut album, "Himehajime" and her name has become widely known in the hip hop scene with the undercurrent support from dj honda. Subsequently, Hime’s sophomore album, “Ukina” stepped up a notch with Tokyo’s reknowned guest artists such as Hannya, GDX, etc. in 2004. Continuing to expand on her growing fan base, in 2005, Hime toured nationally in Japan and her popularity grew immensely. With the upcoming release of her junior album, "Hitogoyomi", her album is one with the concept revolving around topics that include the months of the year. Today’s hottest hip hop producers such as dj honda, GM-KAZ, DJ BASS, Miyoshi/Zenzou, Q, KNOCK, and d-Stilla, were recruited to make head nodding, hypnotic beats with featured guest emcees from DABO, local Hachioji MC's Miyoshi/Zenzou, JUN-G, LOOZ, and Matsurika Unite. With 3 albums under her belt, "Hitogoyomi" is definitely set to cause quite a stir in the Japanese hip-hop market in 2007!

Dabrye (pronounced "DOB-ree") is just one alias of Ghostly artist Tadd Mullinix, who shifts through various guises with a refreshing competency and sophistication. As Dabrye, Mullinix explores hip-hop, creating head-nodding beats with saw-tooth bass lines that explore hip-hop forms with a keen eye to forward-thinking production and rhythms. It is a combination that has earned Dabrye considerable praise from both the hip-hop underground (Jay Dee, Jurassic 5) and the electronic music press, earning him a Next 100 mention from URB in 2002 and praise from publications as diverse as Rolling Stone to the Wire.

The debut Dabrye LP, One/Three, appeared in 2002 to major acclaim and was quickly followed by Instrmntl for Scott Herren's (Prefuse 73) Eastern Developments label. Both albums earned glowing reviews for their rhythmic innovation and minimalist execution. Dabrye began work on his next release, Two/Three, in early 2003 with the song "Game Over," featuring Jay Dee and Phat Kat. He also collaborated on two tracks for Prefuse 73's One Word Extinguisher.

i have had the 'grandmasters' album for quite some time now, but this is the first time i have seen this video (gza's manurisms are priceless). gza's distinct style and mugg's fine beat production make this one of my favorite jams (out of so many). so, i hope you enjoy, but it's alright if you don't.... just means your an r-tard.

General Principles:

this track is off of dj muggs' soul assassins album. it is definately not one of the best videos ever made, but it's nice to watch along w/ the fresh tunes.

The Coup is a hip-hop group based in Oakland, California. It formed as a three-member group in 1992 with rappers Raymond "Boots" Riley and E-Roc along with DJ Pam the Funkstress. E-Roc left on amicable terms after the group's second album, and The Coup is now a duo.

The Coup, politically radical in their music, align themselves with other radical hip-hop groups like dead prez. Their music is characterized by electronic sounds and bass-driven backbeats overlaid by humorous, cynical and sometimes violent lyrics criticizing capitalism, American politics, prostitution, and police brutality, among other things.

Upon discovery of the music and message of Bob Marley, a new man is born in Jahsun. Jahsun turned to the teachings of Ras Tafari, which in turn landed him in the overstanding of self love and balance. This funk/rocker, hip-hopper, dreadlocker is a modern day freedom fighter chanting against Babylon (the distractions or confusions that bring forth seperation from the divinity in self or the divine in others.) Jahsun uses a blend of conscious hip-hop, dancehall, and reggae that breaks all boundaries.

Amazing music video for the japanese band Hifana, directed by +cruz and produced by Love, a London based studio. Post production made at Kamikaze Douga.

Both the song and the video are a blend of traditional japanese folklore and modernity.
The clip starts and ends as live action, but in fact it's pure animation!

Hifana is a breakbeat duo composed by KEIZOmachine! and Jelly. Since thier beginnings, Hifana have been known for original live performance during which they cut beats in real time.

(taken from http://dabble.com/node/390690)

On the Wheels of Solid Steel

On September 18th 2002, reigning DMC World 3rd place from 2001, DJ Kentaro (Kentaro Okamoto) re-tried for his 1st time World Champion title and claimed the title with the perfect score ever in DMC World history. Dedicating his winning 6 minute set to his consciousness "No walls between the music", DJ Kentaro finally took 2 gold Technics 1200's and a matching Technics DJ mixer to its home country.

Kentaro’s blend of hip-hop, breaks, drum & bass and turntablism is untouchable. He is a mad dexterous surgeon who slices and dices beats into a breathtaking sonic concoction in his Sendai laboratory and at events all over the world. When Kentaro is behind a set of 1200s and a mixer, he's on stage: sometimes he's shy, sometimes he's sassy, but I've never heard him be anything short of absolutely splendid.

“More than just a technical DJ, Kentaro is a performer, inciting the crowd into a frenzy while titillating the scratch fetishists. Starting with the Roots and winding up with Pharcyde, Wayne Marshall and Sizzla - with cut and juggle excursions through all the other artists from all over the world, Hip-hop, reggae, drumn' bass, house, electro and jungle -he slid easily to a second victory,” stated Blast Magazine.

Where some turntablists are content to fill their routines with the same ol' thang, Kentaro uses his awesome technique to move beyond the crab scratch and has catapulted drum 'n' bass and dance music into a realm that nobody has yet to explore. My Favorites Songs - Kentaro's first ever mix CD - stands as a testament to his pioneering vision of melding the mentality of a battler with the street smarts and savvy of the hip-hop elite.

Lauded for years by hip-hop aficionados, Kentaro has won the respect of Japan’s Hip Hop Best Artists (tied winner was Eminem from USA) which explains why revered Japanese labels like Endeavor Entertainment, W + Kennedy Tokyo Lab, Artimage and Jazzysport. Undiluted and Virus have presented him with exclusive tracks you won't be able to hear anywhere else. And let's not forget Kentaro's exclusive turntablist cut ups - three mind blowing pastiches that are all ahead of its time. Kentaro is moving at the speed of vox. Sleep on his skills and he's gonna leave you in the dust.

DJ Kentaro, number one DJ in the world, and it's just the beginning…

traveling back up north from houston, i couldn't get this song out of my head. and to make it worse no radio stations were playing it. i had to stop in sac-town to pick up the album because i knew that spokane's shitty stations wouldn't be playing it anytime soon.
