Pure Sugar

Artist:
For my Secret Santa exchange at work, I was given a bag full of used trashy pop/techno/dance CDs. Great gift. Among the Britney Spears and Spice Girls CDs was this gem: Pure Sugar's self-titled debut album. A little background on the group: They came out with their first album in 1998. Pure Sugar sets itself apart from the rest of the dance music from this era by using "live" vocals and drums. The vocals aren't pitch-corrected. The drums aren't looped. It's still a dance album, but it sounds a lot more human. There was an interesting "connection" between Mae West and Jennifer Star, Pure Sugar's singer. When she was a little girl, a psychic told Jennifer that both she and Mae West were struggling actresses in Paris in a past life. Unknowingly, years later, Jennifer moved into the apartment Mae West lived in for the last 40 years of her life. All of a sudden, things started working for Jennifer. She formed Pure Sugar, signed with Geffen, and came out with her first album, all within ten months of signing the lease. In the first and last article written about Jennifer and Pure Sugar, she said that she was moving out of the apartment that brought her so much success. And that was the last we heard about Jennifer Starr. Coincidence? Probably. I'm unsure of what happened to Jennifer. I haven't found anything about her on the web. The DJs in the group did go on to work on other projects. But, where's Jennifer? I have no idea. Here's a video of "Delicious," the biggest hit from the album.
