So, I'm recovering. It's the morning after the night before. This is never easy when you have a three-year-old to wake you up extra early. It's made particularly difficult on this particular morning as I'm a little disappointed in myself, then further compounded by the surprise that was waiting for me at the back door.

Yesterday was a fine day. I filled up the paddling pool for the little Tinker, and we enjoyed a bbq as a family before I hit the town. At some point during this mellow reverie I managed to get my shoes wet. On the inside. No major hassle, they're only my work trainers and I wouldn't be wearing them out. We left them by the back door to dry while there was still some sunshine left.

Now, before any of this happened, I had needed a little jolt, or a kick up the backside, to get into the swing of summery things like paddling pools and long trips to the park. I guess I was still a bit wintery. I don't know why, but every now and again it just comes to me that I should stick on Therapy?'s ShortSharpShock EP, which definitely comes as described on the packet. It's not even ten minutes long, but it never fails to get me moving. I like the third song on it best, probably becaused I used to be able to play the riff myself.

When I opened the back door this morning, with my senses still dulled and not really expecting warmth and brighness from the sun, I was confronted with my trainers. And slug trails. The slugs had been over and through my shoes. How wonderful. I found my already dim mood sullied further and I was in need of that short sharp shock again - much sooner than I had anticipated. Unfortunately that second little jolt hasn't inspired me to do anything about my trainers, they're still out by the back door. But it has given me the impetus to shake off the hangover and raise my mood with more good music.

I had to put on Amadou & Mariams' Dimanche a Bamako. There was simply nothing else for it. It's a joyous and relaxing treat every time.

It's one of the very few albums that I can stick on any time, no matter what my mood or what I'm doing, and it fits perfectly. There's not many pieces I can say that about, and I normally pick what I'm listening to by my mood (or, perhaps, what I want my mood to be).

The other three albums that I can do this with are Belle & Sebastian's Tigermilk, Cut Chemist & DJ Shadow's Brainfreeze, and RjD2's Since We Last Spoke. Random, I know, but noting else springs to mind as being quite so qintessential.

After the brightening of Amadou & Mariam I think maybe I'll have a listen to If You're Feeling Sinister... because I might still be feeling just a little sinister somewhere, and I can't resist the infectious Me & The Major. And after that? Well, we'll just have to see where the day takes us, but it's getting brighter with every passing song.
