WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

back-handed compliment from the little bro

Posted over 2 years ago
I got a myspace message from my little brother today (evidently it's how the kids are communicating these days) about my profile song "The Fallen" by Franz Ferdinand. The aside being that he recognized it from an Internet video to two nutjobs purchasing and smashing a Nintendo Wii on release day while he sweated whether he'd be getting one for Christmas. Of course I knew better...Anyway he writes:"That's the song from the smash my Wii video!!!! It's still a good song nonetheless. That as well as many other you introduced me too from your colorful collection of music."Colorful isn't the word I'd have chosen...perhaps eclectic. Yeah I've got a few guilty pleasures but it's a solid collection I think. But I digress...So I have to say that his note made me happy. When I put together his computer I left my mp3 collection (which is my entire cd collection plus a few odds and ends) on the hard drive for him. Oops! I guess I'm happy to hear that he's actually taking an interest in some of what I'm listening too. Even the Depeche Mode. There is still hope for today's youth! The thing is, I'm the oldest child in a family of 8 (save the Catholic jokes), so I never had anyone close to my age to impart music and culture on me. That's probably why I couldn't care less about music until I went to college. Plus I've been a pretty shitty older brother for most of my life, and lately I've tried in a lot of ways to change that. I see a lot of who I was at that age in him, and I want to be like "hey, don't make the same mistakes I did, don't spend every waking hour playing games, try other stuff". Of course I say that and here I am at almost 2:00AM typing this. Sigh.I guess my overall point to him was that music is very important. It's something that's not hard to become obsessed with and it's actually something that's considered very cool to enjoy. Plus it's a great way to meet all sorts of people and know just a little something about them simply by the sorts of music they're into. I like sharing, and I like being a big brother. =)

  1. Dale says See, I was gonna go with the Mormon jokes, so you've cut me off from both. No matter, it's good to see the little brother interested un the good stuff. Keep at it, he may yet ditch my Myspace for MOG.

  2. mutterimieli says Ahhh.. but I'm not catholic nor mormon but the I am the youngest of 8 (no wonder I'm so messed up). And I learned from watching my older siblings what "NOT" to do. But I did bask in the musical glory that they had laying around the house well, except the white album, I think it was Fleetwook Mac's Tusk but I'm not sure because I was threatened beyond life if I touched it. I am however passing on my love ot music to a couple of my nieces..I will damag..er..infuence them yet!

  3. Anna says I'm an only child, so I have no one to brainwash (other than Dale that is). Good to hear that you're teaching him the importance of music (and Franz Ferdinand, ofcourse). :)
