WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Joey

Posted over 3 years ago
I love Johnette Napolitano's voice. Without her, "Joey" would be just another torch song, but because she sang it in a way that is both gritty and sweet, it becomes something much more. The lyrics always get caught in my throat when I try to sing along...

  12. dsinghe says I really used to dig that band when I was in HS/college. I always thought they sounded like a sleek, modern, very LA version of Fleetwood Mac (with Johnette in the Stevie Nicks role, of course). James Mankey's guitar is also frequenly overlooked - a lot of stylish restraint there. Reminds of Daniel Ash in that regard. For some reason, I also really liked the fact that CB was also way out of touch with the rest of the alt and rock scene at the time. Neither GnR nor Janes Addiction. Not goth-morbid or pop happy, but somehow an essential part of late 80s/early 90s LA. CB's actually responsible for a couple of my favorite covers - people have pointed out "Everybody Knows." "Tomorrow, Wendy" is also a great example of the band's ability to straddle the elusive line between tragic heartache and jaded perserverance. Some of there more rock-oriented tracks are also quite good: "Still in Hollywood/It'll Chew You Up and Spit You Out" is a good one. "Bloodletting (Vampire Song)" is still a must for every Halloween party. If, like me, you have emigrated from SoCal since your youth, and now miss its nights more than its days, try this: watch one of the late night driving scenes from a Michael Mann movie while listening to Concrete Blonde. For some reason, it always puts me in an LA frame of mind - that feeling of the city seeming asleep while all kinds of discovery and mayhem lie just beneath the surface. Characters wating to be met, stories waiting to be lived...

  13. sugarbaby says Michael Mann's world is Los Angeles, so I can see how it would put you in an L.A. frame of mind. I will have to listen to Concrete Blonde along with Collateral or Heat and see if it reminds me of SoCal nights.

  14. gijibae03 says i had a friend take me to see an acoustic set of esthero, and she did a surprisingly great cover of this song. apparently, she sang it at some local carnival or something, and this is how she got discovered.

  15. ThatsJustMario says I totally forgot about that song! And I didn't even know there was a video for it.... ....but... My favorite song on the album is "Tomorrow, Wendy"...certainly not as happy, but something in the simple music draws me to that one.....

  16. deanajean says Back in the 80's when Concrete Blonde only had the one album out I went to see them at the Palace Theater in Albany, NY. The show was woefully under attended. There were maybe 10-15 people there. Their performance of "Make Me Cry" from that show is one of my favorite things ever.
