I just saw The Fountain and the first thing I did after I stopped crying was buy the soundtrack. Then I started crying again while listening to it. Hopelessly beautiful and poignant, such music will break your heart.Clint Mansell composed the score and it was performed by Kronos Quartet and Mogwai. True dat. As arcane as much of the film is, it's also gorgeous and challenging and heartfelt. I'm so grateful for a filmmaker like Aronofsky who is willing to trust his audience, push the boundaries of the form, go non-linear, and not aim for the lowest common denomenator. And yes, the score is lovely and note-perfect (as is female lead Rachel Weisz).

The film felt like it was delicately assembled frame-by-frame. It was a sophisticated and non-linear story, but it had such irresistible depth that I felt completely immersed. I am also grateful that Aronofsky got to make this film. People misunderstood 2001 when it came out too. I think that in time, people will really understand how brilliant The Fountain is.
