MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:

So rare, 'tis, that I bother going back to a band that disappoints me with its debut. (Which is, of course, very different from discovering a band mid- or post-career and getting the old "stay away from their earliest stuff" warning, which happens now and then though not as often as it should in our SUCCEED NOW! world, where few bands get that second chance.)

But I'm pretty darn happy that I randomly picked up the third album from South, Adventures in the Underground, a few months ago. They've shaken off the troubling "we're on Mo' Wax, so our drums are too big for our songs" thing that partly made that first outing such a leaden affair, and just decided to let rip with some fun riffs and New Order rips to bring grins to Steve's gob.

OK. How comes I've only just got to hear that South have a new, third album out? I thought they had split, no one has mentioned them for years. I worship the ground they walk on. When I stumbled over Stevegoz's comment I thought it must be an American South (like there is a US Charlatans, a US Suede etc), until I ventured over to PitchforkMedia and saw the review. Right, where am I gonna get myself a copy?
