When I finally made my pathetically slow inroads into the world of MP3s all of four years ago, I resisted the iPod. Didn't like the fact that it would only interface with iTunes, and that it was basically a one-way-only device that didn't really let you transfer files from one computer to another.So I bought an Archos jukebox instead, tricked it out with Rockbox, and found it to be a vast improvement over the old Discman. 20 gigs of storage - fantastic! Sure it took forever to load through USB 1.1, and I was doing a ridiculous process whereby I would rip my CDs as WMAs and then convert them to MP3 using a shareware application, but I made do.Then along came Nano. So tiny. So easy to scratch up. So small. So I bought a 4 gig model in October '05. All the iPod I'd ever need, I figured. It could almost hold the 75 or so albums I acquire each year. But only almost, since I rip at 192 kbps. But in the end, Nano felt limited, especially since I've become burned out on trying to keep up on the stuff the kids are into and want to dig a bit more into some back catalog and have it at the ready at all times. (This may just be a case of the Januarys, of course - let's get some new music out!)Anyway, Nano now has a much bigger relative, a brand-new black 80-gig Gen 5.5 "video" iPod that I purchased last week and have named Big Daddy in honor of our favorite backyard bunny. It's a'ight - bigger than I might like, but still teeny compared to the old Archos - but even with careful pruning, I've filled it to 87 percent of its capacity.And after I filled it, I had to go through the playlist I'd created to fill it and spend a few hours retagging things that iTunes decided to fuck with. More than 250 tracks, in fact, had gotten messed up even though I had tagged them cleanly when I ripped them from my CD collection. Good old iTunes; most. overrated. program. ever!So now I'm trying to figure out the best use for my Nano. Cram it full of my 700 or so all-time favorite tracks? Take a lazier approach and fill it with compilations? Use it for nothing but new stuff, since it's still the player I'll be most prone to travel with when I'm hoofing it?Anyway, since I'm going to outgrow Big Daddy in a year or two, I guess I'm going to end up being an iPod lifer. No way I'll ever get one of their goofy phones, though. No way.
