Some songs are instant favorites of mine from the very first instant that I hear them. Just now I stumbled upon one in the form of "Shade and Honey," from the new album by Sparklehorse. A bit of twangy guitar over a simple drumbeat and bits of organ bleed into a near-whispered vocal by Mark Linkous and just draws me in to a strange and wonderful place. It's practically Sparklehorse-by-numbers, and yet so so good. If you have the last Sparklehorse album, you probably know the feeling.bq. I could look in your faceFor a thousand yearsIt’s like a civil warOf pain and of cheerbq. But if you was a horseI could help you with your chainsI could ride you through the fieldsBy your fiery manebq. May your shade be sweetAnd float upon the lakesWhere the sun will beMade of honeybq. I grab diamonds, write you a poem'Cause no one here can save youShe’s returning to the EarthBut one day she’ll be silverbq. Stars are dying in my chestTill I see you againShe was born with the wings of a hawkBut now she combs her hair with bloodbq. May your shade be sweetAnd float upon the lakesWhere the sun will beMade of honeybq. May your shade be sweetAnd float upon the lakesWhere the sun will beMade of honeybq. May your shade be sweetMay your shade be sweetAnd float upon the lakes...bq. May your shade be sweet
