MOG MOG

WHERE E=MC HAMMER

oh my wife and i are mourning, big time! and it is not even over, not yet. for the finest show in the history of television( yea, you heard me) is coming to a close, and quick. saying it is as painful as our beloved bubbles coming off smack( but hooray, he is clean in season 5). yes, there are only 2 more episodes in the brilliant 5 year, 60 episode run of "The Wire", David Simon's epic series about the gritty reality of life in Baltimore. and to boot two great characters have been whacked in recent weeks, Prop joe and our favorite, the wicked but principled Omar Little. i was going to write a long ode on why it is the greatest thing ever, but i found this clip instead which articulates it pretty well. though loosely a cops and robbers tale, in 5 years it has completely indicted the criminal justice system, politics, unions, our educational system and modern journalism. as a bonus it is quite simply the best conceived, written and acted show of all time. the complexity of the interwoven plots and the rich character development is a marvel. nothing happens quickly, it is a huge but incredible commitment of time. one episode will do you no good, you must watch the whole season to get the pay off( and in my opinion, the entire series). So do yourself a favor, start with season 1 and 60 glorious hours later, let me know what you think.

Oh aren't you two so adorable, heh!

You might even be able to get the dvd series at the local library. I know my local one has The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, 24 e mucho mas! Just a thought for Bruce to try it out w/o having to buy it Steve. That's how I got hooked on both The Sopranos & 6 ft. under. I'll check to see if they have The Wire at mine.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaa......... reflections of the truth otherwise invisible until put into a light visible to our eyes. An amazing thing indeed as well as important. You mean to tell me we have social ailments at the hands of things like the justice system, the press, media in general, the education system, etc etc....? Hmmmm, whoda thunkit;)

Peace Dude, and thanks for the heads up; I have never watched it but always have room for in spite of not having time for as I would like the observation of things in this "magic light". Harry

Good for you, Steve, for writing this up! (I, too, was sad to see Prop Joe and Omar go.) Homicide is wonderfully written (those dialogues ...) but doesn't have the kind of scope and ambition as a social narrative that Wire does, a scope and ambition rarely seen in contemporary TV. For what it's worth, though, season 5 hasn't come to the level of seasons and 1 and 4, which I think are clearly the best ones. This season's journalism angle hasn't played out as fruitfully as the one on schools in season 4, for example.

great point 1234, i think i agree, season 1 was probably the best with 4 right on it's heels! though i did love the frank sobotka role in season 2 and season 3 was obviously very strong. i think i would put this season in the middle of the pack, but it has special meaning because i am saying my goodbyes, if you will

quickly became one of my favorites too, if not fave. brilliant show indeed.

I only spent one day in Baltimore, but walking through some parts of downtown were, ah, pretty gritty, for sure. Had a great time though, caught an afternoon ball game at Camden Yards, Orioles beat the Twins!

SHiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiT! ;)

kristiana says:

Ha, exactly, Steve!

And the museum - yeah, there was so much to take in, and it seemed to me that maybe part of the layout/design had as one of its intentions to make the viewer feel like they themselves are being herded...but then you get to the end and that big open space to meditate in and absorb, with the flame...I should have stayed in that room longer.

and i hope you do anzi. i loved the show, don't get me wrong but they kind of jumped the shark in episode 6 when they spent all that time on Vito. but that peyote/vegas episode was almost old school soprano's for sure, the ending, i will always remember that ending( it was authentic in my mind!)

do you even watch the wire?

i missed this season. hear it's the best one. i'll let you know my thoughts after i rent dvd. but the whole cannon of the sopranos was epic. i think it will go down in history with the honeymooners, all in the family, as one of the all time greats.

How have I not heard how great this is...?! I was born in the damn town and lived there for the first 12 years of my life. Is it ruined tho...now that I know Prop Joe and Omar die?!

My recent addiction (belated as well) is Deadwood. Great series there too.

steve simon says:

sorry about that sunshine, i realized that was a weak giveaway, but it is not relevant to the overall plot and besides, everyone basicall dies in the end, either emotionally or physically.

trust me you will love it, particulerly if you like brilliant tv and that is your old stomping ground. yes, deadwood is brilliant!
