A trip to the dentist is always a killer for me. and it was just a cleaning, nothing more. but the scraping in my head i endure when they brutally go after the plaque i left from my poor flossing habits........well, that is my own private hell. what got me through was the lovely music of one of the very greats: Joni mitchell and her 1971 album, Blue. it is exhilarating and sobering and honest and pure. the little details she throws out paint a vivid picture that after all these listens kept me from running straight out of the dental chair screaming. if not for that voice, that unique voice and that beautiful, mysterious melody.........well, that it is a fate worse than death when your an anti dentite. three cheers for Joni

a classic- many say her best

At it's core it is a confessional that is easily Joni's most intimate work revealing some heavy sadness at the time

I learned that using "in-ear" headphones at the dentist is baaad during the drilling :)

Stevie,

When it comes to music you are a seer, {my trusted Mog}.

I was in love with Joni the first time I heard her, during the last Big Sur Folk Festival, I got to meet her, I even sat on her lap, { no I'm not a lap dancer, but about as close to heaven, in my teenage years i ever got.}

She is a Muse with as much humanity and grace that has ever landed on this little fragile Earth we call home.

Thanks for keeping her ever present.

Peace & Love,

Robert

Your dentist might take you up on "Music for Dental Calculus Removal." My dentist functions in a collaborative corporation with his brothers, and has patient-controlled cable TV monitors to cut down the anxiety level. I wonder if Gordon Lightfoot's "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" could make complicated root canal work less of a trial? And what dental activity might be set to Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Taking Care of Business?" ("Is it safe?" cackled Dr. Szell.)

back in my indiana days, i had a cool dentist who kept the nitrious on full blast, put a blanket over me, lit candles and had a wide screen full tv right above your head with sat tv................it was almost tolerable

A Seinfeld reference gets me every time. Want the dental trips to be less painful and expensive? Buy an electric toothbrush. It makes one hell of a difference. Since you appear to be conjoined twins, does he need a special chair?

Once again, you're right on target, friend. I share your dental woes. The single most painful physical experience I have ever had --- far worse, really, than childbirth (well, childbirth with an epidural) was a root canal I had some years back. The doctor gave me shot after shot, and it was still like he was jamming push pins in my tooth repeatedly. I cried in the chair and finally had to say "enough." It took years to ever get the tooth right --- actually, it finally had to be pulled, to my sadness. This is my first adult tooth loss, and it's kind of embarrassing. I'll have to get a bridge and all that when I can afford it. It's in the back, happily -- so no one can really see it. But still, after all the hard work my mother put into taking me to the dentist every six months, I ended up blowing it with one tooth. That damn dentist has to take part of the blame for failing to "stone me, to my soul." God, Joni Mitchell can take me places. Really, just out of this plain old world into a dreamy land where I can make a figure eight on the ice like the girl on Sesame Street --- remember? Thanks.
