WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

cliff notes review of Neil

Posted over 2 years ago
What: Neil YoungWhere Nokia LiveWhen: last fridayWhy: because i love himPositives: crystal clear sound and quirky set listnegatives: venue is sterile and sightlines are horribleHightlights: "everybody knows this is nowhere", "oh lonesome me" and "love is a rose"lowlights: the brutal 20 minute version of Chrome Dream's "no hidden Path"Verdict: poor. this was as bland and by the numbers as i have ever seen at a Neil show. trifecta encore of Cinnamon girl, Cortez and Tonight's the Night eased the pain

  1. deadmandeadman says Neil is searching for his audience again. I have no doubt he'll reconnect at some point, but his excursions into agipop & puerile preaching have alienated many. It is disconcerting to see him in concert rehashing the last twenty years "by the numbers" as you say. His compass is broken.

  2. steve simon says i agree, but i don't get it, he is so relevant compared to most

  3. deadmandeadman says I think most of the greats who have beat the odds and survived as artists across decades have had their periods when they're lost in the desert. Some never find their way out.

  5. deadmandeadman says I agree with your assessment of Mr Coleman, and yet there are so many paths to explore within his sound and so many variations there-in, that each performance becomes a work of art in a way that a rock show, or even a jam band can never approach. His improvisations are inventive and witty, and his age has honed his edge, not dulled it. He still creates diamond fire crystaline tones and figures, but he's seasoned it all with the humor and wisdom of age. His work on Joe Henry's cd of a few years ago is so incredibly RIGHT, awesomely tight, and sonicaly delightful it dances my heart around the room even as it recalls the harsh bitter truths of freedom, loss, and illusion. One of the first albums I ever owned, (it was given to me by someone who got it from someone, etc etc etc, because everyone got a kick out of the fact that I, a little kid, would like music so much) was called The Shape Of Jazz To Come. I played that thing 'till the needle went through the grooves! Over the years I've checked in to see what the madman is up to, he rarely disappoints.

  9. david hyman says crap. when neil is lost, the country is in trouble. chrome dreams doesn't cut it for me. i haven't been drawn to play it more than 3 times. bummer. when the hell are all those archives in the box set coming out. that's what i want. i also want to see neil with crazy horse again at the shitty little bar in half moon bay that changed my life. or that neil show in a park in stockholm with pearl jam that changed my life. or that neil show in golden gate park when he filled in for a sick eddie vedder.

  11. deadmandeadman says Yes! Neil and Crazy Horse, a small bar, and rocknroll like bouncing mountains, soaring and screeching, Neil spraying glistening shards of dissonance through gobs of thunder riffs. THAT's the Neil I need!

  15. 2bhumane says Wow! What discourse. I saw Neil last year at the Bridge Festival, and he was preaching to the Choir, and I was gladly singing along. Let's give him some time in the desert, as much time as is needed, he has led me before and I bet he will again. Peace & LOve.

  19. jameson says I'm definitely stoked that Neil is a) still with us after his brain scare and b) still prolific. But is he falling victim to the curse of being too prolific? I mean, his albums are so hit or miss.
