I haven't listened to F.O.D.M. since their debut, but seeing this movie yesterday reminded me of the strength and talent of this musical collective. The music in the film is very effective, not just in support of the visuals, but in mood and composition. The score is chock full of awesome guitar parts, too. The film does a good job of taking a non-fiction subject and turning it in to a typical Linklater narrative (multiple characters with just as many story arcs), but I am really here to praise the soundtrack. I don't usually buy soundtracks, but I've added it to my X-mas list.

The soundtrack, featuring music from and inspired by the motion picture, features luminaries such as Spoon, Nortec Collective, La Sinfonia, Elvis Perkins, Robbers on High Street, and more. The most grisly scene in the film is accompanied by the music of Friends of Dean Martinez, who recorded the score and thereby contributed to what could be perhaps the most dramatic combination of music and film in this century.
Bill Withers' three primary recordings have been remastered and re-released by Columbia Records in the last couple of years: Just As I Am, Still Bill & Live at Carnegie Hall. The majority of the tracks on any "Best of" come from "Just As I Am" and "Still Bill." The music on these recordings are soulful, spiritual and funky. If you love Bill's vocals and songwriting then do not deny yourself these albums.
And if you would like to know more about the blue collar, enigmatic Bill Withers then I would recommend back-ordering or searching out issue #16 of Waxpoetics. The interview with Bill focuses on his work with Booker T. as well as his outlook on music and life. Waxpoetics is also one of the best zines I've ever read when it comes to "rap, hip-hop, funk & soul". The look and feel of the zine is beautiful and the writing is respectable:

Swedish rockers obsessed with western rock-n-roll. sounds of beatles, allman brothers, cream, badfinger and other warm-toned 60's rock acts. tracks that feature guitar + organ = soooo good. "the no name record" is a beautiful debut. "3WD" is the first of 2 releases planned for 2006. Get 'em where you can!
