Far East Movement's Lowridin': Hit or Miss?

Posted about 1 year ago

Today on Power 106, "where Hip Hop lives," sung words of "However far away, I will always love you" filled the car, but instead of Robert Smith's voice, it was an electronically distorted (fine, remixed. whatever) voice that was singing the lyrics to the popular Cure song. After some careful listening with my face scrunched in a confused grimace, I managed to also catch the lyrics "you mah ride to die chick, you keep my engine running . . . in the backseat, legs up, windows all foggy". After some quick googling when I got home, the song turned out to be Lowridin' by Far East Movement - a band that I had heard about maybe two years back; they're an LA based hip hop group that is sometimes predominately known for being composed of all Asian Americans. The band has apparently made a hip hop track about (gangster?) love, sampling the Cure for that extra twang (I will admit that it is fairly catchy). The suits must be eating this stuff up because Far East Movement is now getting mainstream radio play across the nation. However talented these guys are though, Lowridin' still sends me the wrong vibes. It was bad enough when 311 made their own cover of Lovesong a few years back and somehow managed to get recognition (from some less saavy Top 40 listeners, I guess) for writing both the lyrics and melody to the song. I guess what I'm upset about is two things: 1) There's a possibility that the lyrics "I'm a certified pimp and I got it going on" may at some point get associated with The Cure or 2) The catchy Cure sample may get (even if ignorantly) associated solely with the Far East Movement and not the band that rightfully made it one of my favorite "ballads" composed in the last three decades.

Far East Movement - Lowridin'

Hit or Miss?

You can decide for yourself.

ugh bogus! it's pretty bad when even the vocoder thingy sounds like it's imitation.
