Oh my phil elverum.

Posted almost 3 years ago

so today I ventured to pitchfork.com (to my dismay) and came across a interview with phil elverum from the microphones and mount eerie. It made me laugh so I thought I would just have to share it.

Here it is:

>> Favorite New Songs of the Past Year

I don't keep track of what's new and what's old. But a song that I'm pretty sure is from the last year is by No Kids, called "Bluster in the Air". It's a good record [ Come Into My House ], and that song is my favorite off of it.

>> Favorite Older Songs at the Moment

I have been listening to a lot of metal. There's this record that I really like, from 2006, by Xasthur, called Subliminal Genocide . That's one of my favorite records right now.

And also Half-Eaten Guitar by Wyrd Visions, this kind of unknown dude from Toronto. He has one album out on a Toronto label but he seems to be doing his own thing, not pursuing it that hardcore. [ pause ] I'm just looking at my iPod here, that'll jog my memory. Well, there's this one song by Earth called "Ouroboros Is Broken", from the album Extra-Capsular Extraction . It's really good.

>> Favorite New Band

Wyrd Visions from Toronto. He just has the one album, and it's mostly good [laughs ]. And I like this band from Olympia called Wolves in the Throne Room .

>> Artist You Would Most Like to Collaborate With

I always thought it would be fun to collaborate with Björk, just because she seems to do a lot of weird stuff. But it's always her project. A friend of mine once called it "colonialist" [ laughs ]: Her sound is colonial, because she just collaborates with people and brings them into her sphere. I think you might have some issues [laughs ], but I would love to do it.

Pitchfork: I guess it would be hard to invite her just to come sing a verse.

Yeah, I get the the thought that she's the inviter, not the invitee [ laughs ].

>> Favorite Song Ever

I decided that I would say this Björk song. I feel so weird and embarrassed because it's, like, so normal, and it's not a cool discovery, but this song of hers called "Undo".

Pitchfork: It's hard to write off any of Björk 's material as "so normal."

That's true. I just mean, I'm automatically compelled to try and think of something that's kind of "underground" or-- I want to seem like a cool dude.

>> Last Great Concert I Saw

I don't go to shows that I don't play because, well, I live in a small town. I go to shows there when they happen, but I'm usually on tour. I saw Lucky Dragons -- we played together in this beautiful church in Sydney. That was pretty amazing. And the other night in Toronto, I played with Wyrd Visions, and the set was incredible, and it was also in a big church. I brought a bunch of his CDs to sell on my merch table [ laughs ], just to get them out there.

>> Last Great Film You Saw

I got out of a movie just now, and it sucked: Blindness . We're on tour and we just had a day to kill. I love watching movies, but they all blur together at some point. I want to have a good answer for this because I love movies...

Dersu Uzala is my favorite movie. It's by [Akira] Kurosawa, but it's in Russian, and it's filmed in Russia during a weird period, like, the mid-1970s, when they couldn't get Japanese funding. And it's this story about these Russian explorers that meet up with a Mongolian trapper. Just beautiful imagery in it.

>> Last Great Book You Read

I keep coming back to this poet, Gary Snyder. His essays-- his non-poetry-- are incredible, and extremely inspiring and smart. There's a couple of books, his collected prose and essays, and the one I read recently is called A Place in Space: Ethics, Aesthetics, and Watersheds . He's really good at zooming out, taking a really broad perspective, thinking on 40,000-year terms rather than focusing on this stupid presidential election and things that are meaningless and fleeting, and reminding us that, "Wait, no, we have to think broader." It's about the whole planet. But in a really beautiful way, because he's a poet, too, so you feel it, as well as having the facts and numbers and the pragmatic things that we need to know to be able to live in the world as a good person.

>> Favorite Piece of Musical Equipment

I like a bass drum. A big one.

>> Favorite Record Shop

I have a favorite book store, does that count? They might have a CD or something in there [ laughs ]. There's this store in Montreal, the Drawn & Quarterly store. It's pretty good, it's new. I just got a couple of things that I bought mostly for the cover art-- the new Drawn & Quarterly Anthology , and aKing-Cat Classix compilation.

>> Favorite City to Play

I like Copenhagen, just because my shows there have been really good for some reason. Not that I love the city itself, but every time I play there it feels amazing. Pretty nice people there.

>> My Dream Merch Table Would Have...

I've joked about things like this for so many years. I've actually done some pretty weird ones. I'd like to sell something that's really functional, so maybe a chainsaw [laughs ].

>> Strangest Display of Affection You've Received From a Fan

Well, it's always weird to get hugged when you are not expecting it by a stranger who is acting really nervous. I mean, it's normal-- a lot of performers experience that, but it's always weird. I haven't gotten any, like, nude people [ laughs ].

>> Best Purchase of the Past Year

Probably food [ laughs ]. Well, specifically the farm share I get from this local farmer where I live. You know, you subscribe and get a weekly shipment of vegetables and fruit. That's the best thing that you can buy.

>> Best Thing I Did This Year

I've done so many incredible things! This summer we put on this music and arts festival in my town called What the Heck Fest . I thought that was a highlight of the year.

>> Favorite Venue

I always like to play in beautiful cathedrals, when I can somehow get access to do a punk show there. For example, this one we played in Toronto the other night was incredible, it was just really opulent. Sort of a special event. It was atChurch of the Redeemer . It's right downtown. I like how it feels distinct from watching a show in a bar. It feels like a whole different type of human activity.

>> Favorite Radio Show

On CBC Radio, the Canadian national radio, there's a show called "WireTap". The host is Jonathan Goldstein. It's amazing. It doesn't have much of an internet program, they don't podcast, and it's on at really weird times, but it's amazing.

>> My Ringtone

I think it's called "UFO" or something? Or a spaceship or something? iPhone, it's like [ makes spacey noises ]. Sounds like a theremin. It was the least obtrusive one available.

Then even funnier I came across one of the funniest mixtapes to do with phil elverum.

here that is:

The last 12 songs that made phil elverum cry (excluding "The Moon")

Phli Elverum's tears can cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried, except possibly during these songs:

03. Karl Blau - "Ode to Ocean" (Beneath Waves)
04. Beat Happening - "Indian Summer" (Jamboree)
05. Elevator Through - "Foggy Sea" (Elevator Through)
06. Sade - "Slave Song" (Lovers Rock)
07. Eric's Trip - "Sand" (Songs About Chris EP)
08. The Moools - "Bonchi No Natsu" (Yoyo A Go Go 1999)
09. Julie Doiron - "Don't Ask" (Desormais)
10. Jim O'Rourke - "Women Of The World" (Eureka)
