Due to my recent nostalgia kick for late-'90s third wave ska, I decided to do a little research and try to find out if there are any decent ska bands around today.
I'm new to the San Diego area, having recently relocated from the east coast, so I started by looking for local ska. My first search led me to this band:
Gadfly
They have a few tracks available on their web site, and although this is all I've heard from them, I can say I like their vibe.
Gadfly is a trio, guitar-upright-drums with the guitarist Tommy and bassist Pino sharing lead vocal duty. It seems like they can switch pretty effortlessly from poppy upbeat ska rhythms to swirling, reverb-laden reggae.
Here's a live track from their web site called "Fishbowl/Time Will Tell"
If you're in the San Diego area and want to see them live, they are playing at Winstons in Ocean Beach on Nov. 7

I don't think anyone read my previous post about ska. Quick review:
I miss it. Is it still around? If not, it's time to bring it back.
Here's one from the Pietasters, a DC area ska band that I saw live many times during my high school days. They're still around, but different.
If anyone has any recommendations for great ska bands currently producing music, let me know! Especially in the SoCal area.

Excuse my ignorance. Will you please tell me what makes ska so alive in the US of A when it's been dead (or at least dormant) in the rest of the world for over two decades? Especially in the country with put it on the global scene (UK), it's but a nostalgic echo.
Sorry, I think you missed my point. As far as I know, ska isn't around anymore. I used to listen to a lot of ska 10 years ago when it was popular (sort of) in the US. My intention was to either
a) encourage a resurgence of ska through nostalgic feelings like my own, or
b) (and this seems a lot less likely) find out that, to my surprise, there already is such a resurgence that I just haven't heard about.
I know ska is long dead--I'm just mourning it.
Yeah. I know, everyone under the sun knows The Clash, but I woke up this morning to Revolution Rock and thought I'd let everyone else have a taste.
I think a lot of their best stuff was the heavily reggae-influenced sound. And thank goodness for it, because we may never have had bands like The Specials or Bad Manners without it.

Man I just love the Clash. Anyone get a chance to see this documentary?
Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten
I heard it was great - and I met one of the producers at Sundance last year - but I haven't seen it - waiting for it to show up on netflix!

Thanks Bartleby - love the Specials! That song, along with "Pressure Drop" (popularized by the Clash) are covers of a great Reggae-soul-funk band, Toots and the Maytals, who are still around and touring - coincidentally they will be in San Diego sometime soon.
Also, Gadfly will be playing a show Nov 20-something with none other than 2-tone legends The English Beat (or as I believe they are known in the UK as The Beat)
