ps----hi bella!!!!!!!!

So I have a date in 4 days. I WILL be spending a couple of hours alone with an attractive female but the thing I’ll be dying to get my hands on,though being feminine as well, has six strings and the capability of turning me back into myself again. A trying chapter of my life is closing and a new frontier is opening. I’m supposed to be getting my music gear out of storage this thursday after going without it since january of 2003 and I AM EXCITED ! Previous to this forced hiatus,I had had the option of creating my own special brand of noise generally any time I wished(with temporary exceptions),from the time I got my first electric guitar when i was 14 until I was forced to throw EVERYTHING I OWNED into the batcave a few years ago. Pretty soon after I found myself without the ability to make MY OWN sounds, I started losing touch with myself and the ensuing 3 years included some of the worst moments of my life. Throughout it all I have kept reconstructing my little studio as a high priority and not too long ago i finally moved into a space that would allow me room to set up my stuff again,(space of my own being the main reason i was unable to set up my gear). I’m totally into it. I bought a decent PC(my first) in March, which is going to open up my aural landscape exponentially as i have never seriously experimented within the digital realm before,it’s always been analog 4 trackin’. And recording is really all I am interested in these days. I realize that whoever is reading this probably has no idea as to my situation in life, but as far as live performance goes, there is pretty much 0.023% potential of that happening anymore. I haven’t been on a stage in 10 years and it is no longer a goal for me in this town. I’m much more interested in finding out how the sounds coming out of myself are going to affect my conscious and subconscious mind as i feel that losing that means of creative expression has stunted an important part of my Self. In the meantime, i find myself listening to others’ sounds, trying to fill that hole that’s there and I’ll tell you-it’s a difficult hole to fill. Part of the problem is my fairly static music collection. I have existed within poverty for some time now and I rarely get new shit.(hail slsk!) I realized recently that i haven’t been to the local independent music store in 2 years! (there’s a lot of crap i haven’t done in 2 years,it’s been a weird 2 years) I also miss out on the social aspect of music. No live shows in 2 years.(AHHHHH!!!!!) I don’t get to drive and listen to music either, not having a vehicle, which sucks it cuz I LOVE driving and blasting music. But no matter how close i get to filling that hole, other people’s music never does the trick like making my own sounds does. That’s why the handle soundmagick came into play, because that’s what happens in my experience. Sounds have the capability of changing things drastically, mentally and physically, and, to me, it’s a type of magick. I don’t know how many times i have found myself in a foul mood or with some type of physical complaint like a headache and realized ,”I bet I’d feel better if I played my guitar” and upon sitting down and improvising for 15 minutes, felt worlds better. My main instrument is guitar and I use a few effects in my signal chain and I had gotten to the point where playing guitar got to be more of a type of meditation for me,a type of brain cache cleansing or something where i would tweak the effects until it felt like I was sort of massaging my psyche. I miss doing that, but it looks like i will imminently be regaining that superpower—well, after I get everything back in working order and get the new soundcard for this thing and figure out the software and teach myself how to play guitar again :-P Until then, iTunes shuffle has me listening to Shine On You Crazy Diamond for,I dunno, maybe the 783rd time and still finding inspiration in it and relating to Good Ol’ Syd. Sometimes i imagine Syd has an anonymous cyberexistence. Perhaps he will get a Mog. Or MAYBE HE ALREADY HAS ONE …....

edit---ugh--that last sentence kinda creeps me out still----brrrrrr

Artist: Album: Track:

So,I was innocently entertaining my neighbor by going through my 7" collection and thought I would play him this seminal track by those groundbreaking teetotallers Minor Threat as we worked up a thc haze. Well,as happens everytime I drag this single out, I immediately notice the subliminal imagery that glares at me from the portrait of these 4 earnest and drug-free young men. The Ian Mackaye approved artwork for this single includes a blatant ILLEGAL DRUG REFERENCE! Take a gander for yourself.

for those without 48 inch monitors here's a close up of the offending image.

Is this well known Dischord lore? Or am I uncovering some sinister black ops enterprise that was going on between those weirdo SST guys planting a mole in the Dischord art dept., attempting to smudge MT's squeaky clean rep? All I know is that there's no way that the band didn't pick up on this,it's the only text in the shot for chrissakes and it's friggin blatant. I like the hands clasped in prayer above ,adds a nice touch.

I'm not a Minor Threat know it all, were they guys who supposedly never ever did any psychoactives or inebrients or pollutants at all or did they useta do it up and then stopped and thought they would tell everyone else to do the same?

I think Ian was the only one that was truly straight edge, and by the time this picture was taken the band was in mid-collapse, so there's a chance that they had already blown their minds...

I'm sure it was planned - Minorthreat were always on the ball and didn't do anything by mistake. As for the band at the time, they were sadly pulling in different directions. After the first 2 EP's it was downhill from there.

Really enjoyed the first demo tape CD. 9 songs in 8 minutes with some banter inbetween. Fantastic.

Meet g.amber valentine and g.ed livengood.

When they're not driving around in their Winnebago with their dogs GoGo and Roo,they like to set up monumental cliffs of Amps and Speakers and a Vintage Acrylic drumkit like Karen Carpenter played and proceed to produce some,uh, INTENSE stuff.

from jucifer.com:

pop, doom, noise, punk, jazz, hardcore, emo, indie, trip hop, art metal, goth, glam, grunge, rock, surf, classical- all are elements that seethe within the jucifer oeuvre.

while such inclusiveness probably reads like chaos, when wielded by jucifer it is cohesive, distinctly their own and completely devoid of falseness.

as a result of their unique sound, subtle recordings and commanding live show, jucifer has been embraced by critics as well as fans. they've played with such diverse artists as vic chesnutt, the melvins, chimaira and high on fire, as well as mike watt, man or astroman, mark arm and royal trux.

the list of bands to whom jucifer has been compared reads with similar diversity: from minor threat to the carpenters, slayer to sleep, hendrix to malmsteen, veruca salt to my bloody valentine, pixies, pantera, portishead, nirvana and napalm death.

as stated by athens, georgia's 'flagpole' magazine early in the band's career, jucifer is 'not for the faint of heart'!

their devotion to intensity and disdain for stylistic rules tends to inspire strong reactions.

the dichotomy between jucifer's lulling, melodic passages, high-volume sludge and brutal machine gun off-time (not to mention the contrast of female vocals alternately siren and banshee) may not appeal to those who like hearing the same old rock music recycled again and again.

the sheer individualism of the band may prove disconcerting to those who prefer neat categories to explain their world.

and the colossal, floor-shaking 'wall of sound' (approximately 15 speaker cabinets and 7,000 watts of power) which bolsters their live show will be daunting to those accustomed to lighter fare.

but for the brave; for the musical omnivore: enjoy!

TIME LINE:

late 1993- in athens, georgia, the band which will become jucifer is formed.

early 1994- third member (original drummer) quits.

mid 1994- first show with just amber and edgar.

mid 1995- jucifer's first studio recording

late 1995- fans help to release a 7" ('superman' b/w 'licorice')

1996- jucifer begins touring (in a 1977 chevy van) and completes 'calling all cars on the vegas strip'. outtake song '77 chevy supreme' is featured on a kindercore records comp called 'treble revolution II'.

1997- jucifer tours, writes, works those restaurant jobs.

1998- a friend helps to release '...cars' which is poorly distributed, but charts high on college radio. labels come sniffing.

1999- jucifer signs to capricorn- of the labels they met with, the only one which had both financial prowess (capricorn was a major label, affiliated with universal/polygram/ def jam) and a history of allowing its bands total control of their art.

july-december 1999- the bulk of 'i name you destroyer' is recorded.

2000- capricorn releases a re-mastered version of 'calling all cars on the vegas strip'. jucifer tours the u.s. more thoroughly than ever before. capricorn begins a business metamorphosis, leaving them temporarily without distribution.

2001- capricorn continues to be without distro. they agree to allow jucifer to record the 'lambs' e.p., planning to have it available only on tour. as 'lambs' is released, distro falls into place and the record is in stores. '...destroyer' sits on the shelf. jucifer tours most of the year, in fall acquiring the winnebago that will become their only home.

2002- almost two years after completion, 'i name you destroyer' is finally released, to critical acclaim and band's relief. jucifer tours all but 2 months of the year.

2003- jucifer's rented house (in athens) is sold while they are on tour. they scramble to save their most precious things (mostly music gear and their approximately 5,000 vinyl records) and accept that they now formally, as well as physically, live in their tour vehicle. in july jucifer records another e.p., 'war bird', as they await a go-ahead from the label to begin their next album.

2004- jucifer records a new album, planned for fall release. 'war bird' comes out in march. a live cut of 'amplifier' is included on the kill rock stars comp, 'tracks and fields'. the band tours through the southwest, up the west coast, and throughout canada from west to east. alas, velocette (the new label emerged from the ashes of capricorn) now has distribution problems. the new jucifer album is on hold but is expected to be out in spring '05. the band will tour all fall, bringing the 'war bird' show to all the cities that haven't yet seen it. jucifer will also be privately honing songs for the next record- conceived as a double album- which they plan to track as soon as money's available.

BEHIND THE MUSIC (TRIVIA):

jucifer plays every instrument on their recordings as well as writing, producing and arranging their own music. they also do most of the photography and album art.

unlike many 'two-piece' bands, jucifer's live show does not include other musicians or pre-recorded tracks.

jucifer has no house! they jettisoned most of their belongings (circa 2001) to live in their tour vehicle.

yes, they are married. they are proud parents of two beautiful dogs, ages 2 and 9.

she drives. he reads the map!

DISCOGRAPHY:

1995 'superman' b/w 'licorice' 7" (independent)

1998 'calling all cars on the vegas strip' album (independent)

2000 'calling all cars on the vegas strip' remastered version (capricorn)

2001 'lambs' e.p. (velocette)

2002 'i name you destroyer' album (velocette)

2004 'war bird' e.p. (velocette)

And this past Tuesday,Sept. 5th, Jucifer released the new "If Thine Enemy Hunger" LP,which is not a double album like it sez above, it's 15 tracks, but it IS being printed in red and yellow(i think) vinyl and I was ALL jazzed to go to the SINGLE local independent record store that would have this record(which is about 40 miles away)that I get to about once a month since I've been living out in the sticks and when I got there yesterday,2 days after the release,of course there were no copies to be found, the stoopid fuckers only ordered 1 cd and 0 vinyl for the entire metro area ,retail genius! Especially as Jucifer is playing here in 2 weeks. I guess I'll actually special order from the store instead of from the website ,as I hear that physical sales help out the bands more than online or mail order and these guys definitely deserve whatever I can give, they truly Live to Play and Play to Live.

They're touring the East Coast now from the south north, for a good time go see em.
