Always, the Children

Posted 5 months ago

For better or worse, I happen to reside in a place where public officials deem it necessary to invoke the specter of this monolithic class called "the children." Hence, when said public officials deem it necessary to invoke a piece of legislation -- say, gun control -- they always say it is done to "save the children."

And then when political opponents invoke an opposing piece of legislation -- say, fewer gun restrictions (including no restrictions on assault weapons that measure nearly 3 feet in length) -- those folks say they are doing so in part so they can "protect our children."

The war on drugs? Protect the children.

Disease in the nation's food supply? Eradicate to save the children.

Britney gone nuts? Learn from her mistakes to protect the children.

Manny suspended for PEDs? A cautionary lesson for the children.

As ESPN broadcaster Tony Kornheiser has said often (and I paraphrase here), none of this has anything to do with the children at all. Instead, the children usually serve as a prop for a justification the adult can't (or doesn't have the courage to) own up to.

Well here at the Soultronica Sound Emporium, we roll ours a little different. Having grown up in an era when you could get music lessons as part of your childhood curriculum, we'd like the children to have a little bit more sound, a tad more orchestration. Perhaps a bass drum sound that does not come from an 808.

Add a tablespoon of uplift, and about 3 quarts of chicken grease and BAM!!! ... we end up with this special recipe.

We were going to save this for Funky Friday, but some things just can't wait. After all, tending to the children's needs always requires urgency.

This may be the grimiest single in EWF's long and storied history. This is how Soultronica remembers the children.

P&L,

Soultronica
