WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Another shamanic production from Joaquin Claussell, and a perfect follow up to his interpretation of Cesaria Evora's "Sangue De Beirona." Until I heard this, sadly, I never had heard music from Ustad Sultan Khan. (I found that odd because Khan works with bassist Bill Laswell in the group Tabla Beat Science, and Laswell's work is on my "automatic buy" list.) I've been filling my collection with his work ever since. Consistent with Tabla's sonic tableau, this version of "Aja Maji" is exquisitely spiritual, dense, moving, and dubby. Over the past few years, I've found myself returning to dub. I can't quite explain why, but dub really affects me in an unusually strong way.I'll investigate dub in future posts. (If you can't wait, check out Cody B's archives, as he has dug into the dub crates already. See at right for a link to his Mog.) Enjoy.P&L,Soultronica

  1. Cody B says I could see where that might blow some minds..The space between the beats is beautiful. Thanks for the props. I didn't get a chance to post from African Head Charge's Songs of Praise album, and I can't single out what track would fit for this "spiritual time" in the club, but all of the tunes are on topic and a worthwhile listen for sure.

  2. soultronica says Cody B sayeth: "The space between the beats" Alas, you have hit upon one of the central elements of the dub aesthetic. I did peep the AHC sounds on your blog, and duly took notes. That is beautifully ruffneck!! Thanks for introducing me to them. P&L Soultronica

  3. Cody B says Man, I get to get out and see you play sometime. Know any clubs with day/night care?

  4. soultronica says Ha, ha. Man, I don't get out and play nearly as much as I want (or need) to these days myself. And to be fair, the knees and ankles can't go 12 rounds like they used to. I saw on your blog that you organized a Mog meet earlier this year. Maybe we can put together another Mog meet on the east coast, and just lay out all the beats. I'd travel and play for that, fo' sho.
