More Breaks

Woe unto you if you're a music lover but never ever had the privilege of experiencing a gathering at The Loft. Of all the DJs that played during the heyday of New York City nightclubs, The Loft's David Mancuso easily is one of the most influential. The sound system was audiophile quality and pristine; the atmosphere was warm, and the people (members and guests alike) were so welcoming. It always felt like home.I attended Loft gatherings as a guest when the club was located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, next to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. It was like no other club experience I've had, before or since. Legions of NYC underground club denizens continue (properly) to laud Paradise Garage, and deservedly so. But where Garage and Larry Levan always had the aura of spectacle (it was fabulous before fabulosity was even recognized), I always preferred The Loft, if for no other reason than I could just go in, listen, and learn.Of course, whenever Mancuso dropped this track, I lost all semblance of home training. Listening and learning went out the window and gave way to wild fits of movement and joy. "Girl ..." is one of the funkiest cuts in the Motown repertoire, and also a Loft classic. If I recall correctly, Tamla (a Motown subsidiary) originally released this in 1972 as a 45 single with the two parts divided across the single's two sides. (The 12" single did not appear commercially until at least 1977 or 1978. If you find a 12" single of this, it is a bootleg or a re-release.)This full version appeared on the album "People ... Hold On."This track features a witheringly hot break, one which (as Bartleby would say) is sure to shake all the bon bons in the house.Enjoy.P&L,Soultronica

  1. Bartleby says By Jove, this is some wicked breaks. Thanks ever so much for this edifying post. The Big Apple sounds like the place to be back in the 70s. I don't know whether I'm more impressed by your knowledge or by the fact that you actually shook your groove thing at the Loft. For me, it's like seeing the Exploding. Plastic. Inevitable. performances. Now I'm writhing with an ecstatic urge to get on the dance floor.
