alton ellis was born in kingston, jamaica in 1940 and has been present in the history of jamaican music for over 40 years now.mr. soul of jamaica or the king of rocksteady as he's commonly known released lots of great songs during the rocksteady era (1966-1968) mostly for the treasure island & studio 1 labels. this recording was made for the techniques label (owned by jimmy riley of the techniques fame, he replaced slim smith after his death) in 1968.(extra song inside the comments section)

  9. Girlcrawl says Smashing songs; can't say I favour one over the over, and really nice video tribute! Must further explore Studio 1, and the techniques label.

  10. soulrocket says el oceanrain, both tunes are easily available as 7s & it shouldnt cost more than 3 pounds each. la girlcrawl, studio 1 is full of surprises, same for the techniques label thought they focused more on the early dancehall scene of the early 80s. treasure isle is worth checking too. there is a miriad of small labels that released good songs at that time.

  13. Oatmeal says Techniques of the infamous Stalag 17 Riddim? I love what a small world the hit makers of Jamaica were operating in, with such amazing influence on modern music. Great tune.

  14. soulrocket says that’s the one, el oatmeal. one of the biggest rhythms of the 80s. the original stalag is an early 70s tune i cant remember right now... maybe a johnny osbourne tune. this is how the original techniques label looks, the reissues changed the colour from blue to pink.

  17. Marigold says Very nice. Alton Ellis has been on my list of things to check out. I have been really exploring a lot of roots, reggae, rocksteady, dub, toasters, etc for the last two years and am conviced that everyone needs to spend some time with these wonderful Jamacian and English artists. PEOPLE! There is more to reggae then just Bob Marley. (no offense Bob) I am sure I am just preaching to the choir here though. Belle, that video was awesome.

  18. soulrocket says glad you like it, la des. nice seeing you around too. el blue meenie, studio 1 productions are tough & rough & full of soul. now you are talking, el marigold. somehow it is like that. people just know the crossover stuff & did not take much time to investigate whats behind. also the production on bob marley albums from 1972 is just wrong. I listened to a few of the raw original mixes of bob marley records & it is a completely different thing.. no funk/rock production, all jamaican vibes.
