jackie mittoo - evening time

Posted over 2 years ago
jackie mittoo was a keyboard player, composer, arranger & producer at coxsone dodd's jamaican record manufacturing co. aka Studio One. he led or was a member of a succession of studio groups (soul vendors, sound dimension, invaders, brentford all stars, new establishment) and backed bob marley and the wailers, heptones, delroy wilson & alton ellis among others.it is aknowledged that most of the rhythms credited to coxsone dodd were in fact composed by mr. mittoo. the tradition in jamaica back then was the producer paid for the song & then he owned it. with the lack of copyright laws the thing still got more confusing and most of jamaican artists never saw any royalties coming their way.his first album as a leader of the soul vendors is "evening time" released on the summer of 1968 when ska music turned to a more soulful format known as rocksteady (mostly because of the hot summer of 1967, dancers couldnt keep up with the fast ska riddims & started asking for something slower). enjoy. 4. soulrocket says I am not familiar with that late version, where does it come from? it is the drum song with a different name (not an uncommon thing to do in jamaican music).

  13. Fijah says Nice post....Mittoo's one of my favorite artists. As far as keyboard cuts...here's some similar artists I found back when I was really into this stuff.... Darrick Harriott - Presents Scrubbing-A-Dub (or Scrub-A-Dub) The Hippy Boys Africa's Blood All Keyboard....no Vocal or there's always the jazz/ska instrumentals like "The Skatalites" (Mittoo did alot of work with the Skatalites), Byron Lee, Cedric Brooks, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, etc. If there's anything I should be listening to....let me know? I love the old dub and Reggae instrumentals Thanks for dealing with my stoner rabble.

  14. soulrocket says glammerhammer & tigand, cool you liked jackie mittoo’s tunes. the man is a genius. like the derrick harriott album, fijah. specially side A is pretty cool. same for lloyd chambers & the hippy boy whom later turned to become the upsetters. no idea who’s africa’s blood, unless you’re talking about a lee perry & the upsetters album by the same name. here are some records i dig augustus pablo - aquarius dub (1971) augustus pablo - dubbing with the don augustus pablo - east of the river nile (rockers intl) horace andy - dub box, rare dubs 73-76 lee perry & the upsetters - cloak & dagger (1979) lee perry & the upsetters - super ape (1976) mikey dread - dread at the controls (1979) upsetters - blackboard jungle dub v.a. - the sound of phase one, we are getting bad v.a. - version dread, 18 dub hits from studio one (heartbeat) there’s plenty more but you can’t do wrong with any of those.
