funk punk device #1 - killing joke (1979)

Posted over 4 years ago
i've been a fan of killing joke since the late 80s when victor, an argentinian guy who owns one of the best record shops in my city, told me to give them a try. i was 16 years old back then & iggy pop, buzzcocks and the ramones were my heroes. killing joke sounded like nothing i had heard before and i played the "almost red" 12" non-stop for days and when i got enough money i went to the shop to buy everything i could find by jaz colman and friends. i selected "nervous system" and "turn to red" (in comments) off the 4-songs 12" ep. those tunes were also the ones to made it on the 7" release.

  7. GooGoomuc says Awesome tracks I never heard those before, I like "turn to red" nice dub effect. "New Day" is where I was turned on.

  8. soulrocket says micki- she had big breasts. i guess that means having "good taste", heh. i knew about the monty python connection but it is the first time i have actually watched it. it is one of the best i have seen by them yet... i was cracking up as if i had no brain at all. thanks a lot for bringing it here, pal. goes to favorites & i am going to dl it too. :-D wtc- kj was love at first sight for me too. ggm- "turn to red" had me hypnotized for a long time. "love like blood" and "a new day" are such classics. the extended versions are my the ones i dig the most. that video reminds me so much of "eighties"

  9. mickimicki says Touché! So... what's big if the gurl has a good taste? Damn. Mog is a family site. I won't be able to elaborate ;-) I love the part about translating the joke and Ze Stupid Germans. And btw, I just spent a few days with a typewriter much like the one in that Gestapo office in the clip, around actors and extras dressed much like that... working I was an extra in yet another Nazi movie...

  10. Dzendvokh says I've heard the name of killing joke for ages, this is the first time I have actually heard them. It's great when you hear something for the first time, it's been around so long, but it still sounds relevant. Both, ace tracks danny!!!

  11. Marigold says Where was I when this stuff was being released? Actually I know the answer to that but that is for a MOG post in itself. Is it right for me to feel ripped off for not being up on this stuff back in the day? This music is awesome. First Poebegone's post on KJ about a week or so ago, now this. You two have sold me on KJ and they are moving up in priority on my "list" so I can get up to speed like everyone else is.

  12. soulrocket says a family site? hah i had no idea but i sure restrain my spaniard natural tendency to speak gross here, that is a fact. yeah, that part is really funny, the british like to pick on you guys a lot. a nazi movie? you rock, micki. was it this one? .

  13. soulrocket says nick- that is cool, man. their early stuff is the best. give the first album a try you will like it. it is good to listen to their stuff starting from their early works and following the progression. mike - heh i got them 10 years later after their official release. but its never late.

  14. annieander says Wow Danny, not what I am used to hearing from you, but I like it...I prefer turning to red over the 1st. What a wake up guitar break at the beginning. And the drums...nice high hat usage. They have kind of a sigue sigue/mick jones sound to them in red, I do like it. I am with Mike (marigold), where in the world was I when this stuff was coming out. Gads my head was in the gound during the 70's & 80's.

  15. soulrocket says after 8 months of posting only oldies i got bored of it ;-) these things come in waves. i will try not to limit myself from now on. killing joke were part of my punk rock education, they fit there. also i was into mostly british punk rock in the beginning and then i learned later about the american scene. maybe the same happened in the states, and you guys gave preference to the national scene first, which makes sense to me. we called the post-punk/funk punk thing "after-punk" in europe and i recall the esthetics were bleached new jeans, military boots and a black t-shirt. i love "turn to red" a lot too... trippy dubby production there. both tunes are good stuff for dancing.

  16. Anna says Very nice. Dale gave me my Killing Joke knowledge (we don't call him EMCD fer nuffin'!). Cool artwork!

  17. annieander says I 'm plugging the book "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk" by Legs McNeil, cofounder of Punk Magazine. It is a really interesting read of the punk movement in America...an FYI, in case you're interested.

  18. soulrocket says dale has great taste on music, anna. i follow his posts with interest. i am writting down that book‘s name, annie... it looks great. thanks for the advise, punk rock books are great just alone for the saucy stories they are more than worth a read. the annalog‘s (theresa) post and her exhibition of pics of the punk rock scene is a good one too. amazing pictures, and i hadnt seen any of them before.

  19. kristiana says Heeeeey, it's been too long. I'm not doing a very good job of playing catch-up, but, ya know, sometimes life gets in the way. I need to get Killing Joke back in my life. Like some of ya, I was also introduced by a lover who really dug them a lot. That's back when I started playing bass, and bands like Killing Joke, Sisters of Mercy, etc. were pretty excitingly bassy!

  20. mickimicki says OMG! The lady in that Nazi film looks JUST LIKE ME. I think that was me in another life! (And the voice-over sounds just like the voice-overs in super-bad West African video movies, btw) This is the movie I'm in (for a second)

  21. soulrocket says hey, kris. indeed... ive missed you, pal :-) but you know about good friends, no matter how much time passes, they will be still there when you need them. everybody with a killing joke fan ex-lover please step to the right.... micki- what is not to love on those flicks.. even the poor sound quality. another ilsa sub-product. going to check your movie now.

  23. Cody B says Hey rocket, is the type of tuneage that got you going in the SOULrocket direction? ie. you were into punk and gradually funk infiltrated your system until you could hold out no longer...digging the tuneag. I hear some Gang of Four and a little Clash here. Like DZ, I'd heard of 'em, but I really hadn't heard

  24. bloodtea says Great pick D! (I assume that was still in the era that iggy pop wasn't a dissected walking corpse)

  25. Bartleby says Wicked Killing Joke. I owe many great discoveries to one friend of mine but I'm slightly more grateful to him for KJ than the others. I think some people still go on a pilgrimage to Notting Hill Gate to see where they recorded their first LP. Thanks SoulR for the great listen.

  26. soulrocket says cody- i believe i knew some stax & motown back then but i dont think i had heard much funk apart from the well known top 40 releases of that time and the ones played on the oldies stations. but as you said those records made by bands that were into punk rock but also wanted to dance were my first exposure to the genre. i got more seriously into soul, funk & jamaican music 3 years later when i moved to london. there is where i got it right andréa.- glad you liked kj. well, my first 2 albums were "soldier" and "new values" and i played them to death... he was supposed to be into heroin back then., so i guess he was still a walking zombie in those records.

  27. soulrocket says bartleby- i had no idea people went to see where they recorded their first album. they sure were huge in the uk. glad you enjoyed it, michael.

  28. bloodtea says well.. i see he looked like a zombie, but was somehow better than now... i mean, there must be some sort of voodoo to keep that mummy walking and singing ;)

  29. bloodtea says hey, I like Iggy! I didn't say being a zombie/mummy/dissected walking corpse was a bad thing.. ;-) thank you, I'll check that out
