MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:
Album: return of the super ape
Track: bird in hand
(249)

have you ever wondered what language lee perry used in "bird in hand", that weird song included in the "the return of the super ape" album? well, i wondered myself before but i never knew it until today. all the credit of this post goes to jez humble, a member of the yahoo upsetter group and to the anonimous guy in my reggae network that found lee perry's original source of inspiration. one day jez was listening "bird in hand" and suddenly he realised he could recognise some of the words... could it be? lee perry was singing in hindi! his indian girlfriend confirmed it, lee perry was singing in a very bad hindi. after a few minutes with google, bingo! "bird in hand" is actually a cover of a song from a 1950 indian film called "babul". the post did not include the original song from the "babul" movie but here is where the anonimous researcher comes to the rescue. the song was found and i placed it in comments.

Isn't it fun when you find an implausible but real link between two distant entities? Good work, jez (via SR).

it was an amazing find, guys. my guess is perry watched the movie in a local hindi cinema in jamaica and ... knowing how perry’s brain works, who knows which crazy story could be behind it? as spike says all credit goes to jez.

_a local hindi cinema in jamaica_, is that even possible?

soulrocket says:

yes, andréa. there is a large population of indians living in the caribbean. they release their own music too. it is a very kitsch fusion of hindi & soca. i did some research about it 2 years ago. there is also people singing in spanish in trinidad.

this is the best i could find after dealing with 2,000 tunes of "chutney" music, that is how they call it... a very painful experience and i just found 2 ok tunes. but at least this one is half listenable. i like her voice. press click at your own risk.

bollywood is big lots of places you would not expect. i went to a theatre in aleppo, syria which played indian films, it was a really surreal experience, the place was packed with teenage male arabs, I went with a couple of friends one of whom happened to be a woman (only one in the place), so they put us up on the top balcony in the corner... well the movie came on and the place went nuts, I mean there were people acting out the fight scenes and then really getting into fights on the stage. .. and if you've ever seen bollywood stuff you know there;s always a lot of skin shown, so you have these undersexed salivating teenage roudy arabs just going crazy, one of those things I won't forget,

what;s this got to do with anything, ahh not much just that it's not that far fetched, the lee perry story, i mean.

Great post Danny, love these obscure connections, seems to fit perfectly the strange mind of a guy like perry.

I think we need some bollywood posts up on mog.....

Danny, I only trust in chutney that comes from glass bottles (specially the peach & mango one or those really spicy) ihih Geez... 2 in 2,000? oh my.. I played it twice and my ears didn't fell off... it isn't that bad (you see I first read what you've typed... and I was expecting some brain-slashing noises)

Incredible and amazing research job, SoulR.

Bollywood songs are incredibly treacly romantic... I love watching some little clips with subtitles: it's always about love and the infinite beauty of the loved one.

Lee Perry speaks Hindi? Or does he sing phonetically?

hey, nick. my connection failed when i was going to reply to your comment. i am so watching what you say, man. i know a couple of syrian guys around here. that reminded me of how small cinemas in little villages were when i was a kid. cigarettes flying in the air all over the place, people fighting, some guys boning the gfs on the back, one guy listening to the football match & shouting "gooooaaaaal", and lets not forget that the day the film was a western some of the guys liked to clap with the seats to emulate the horses running,... we need more bollywood music, that is for sure. we also need more cinemas with no law.

bill, that is the other name for the song. originally it was titled as i posted it. i got the track from a very hard to find drupatee cd.

andréa- that is what is called inverse psychology.. if i had said the tune was good you would have thought it was terrible, heh. it was a terrible experience listening to those (roughly) 2000 chutney songs. but i was in an caribbean mood. there is also a sort of light r&b sang in french (zuck) that i gave it a try too... zero songs to my account. sometimes its like that. the bottled chutney is still the best chutney. ;-)

bartleby- some of those romantic movies really get in my nerves, but the music is usually cool. i prefer some of the new school films like "dhoom". about perry, i couldnt say myself if that is hindi or not, but jez says so.

mike- hah, yeah. "bird in hand" is the oddest of all tunes in "the return of the super ape". a must have album, by the way.

bnf- i explained it above. yahoo upsetter group and an annonymous guy in my reggae network. quite a find these guys made.

thanks for your comments, guys. and sorry for the late replies.

it is a nice song, wtc, some of the later flicks in the 60s & 70s were quite good in the soundtrack department too.

There is a Mogger, pjebsen who is a huge Bollywood fan. He is mainly a lastfm'er though and he started a huge bollywood group there.

Anyway rocket, cool stuff here, and though I have this album, i never asked the question. I'm glad somebody did..

It must be nice to have talent, an open mind, and a studio at your disposal like scratch did. Wonderful records were made.

Thanks, Cody B, for telling me about this thread!

And thanks to soulrocket for making me aware of "Bird in Hand"!

I was married to a lady from Negril/Jamaica from the late '80s to the early '90s. But since I only got hooked to Indian movies and Bollywood soundtracks about two years ago, her comments on the Indian presence in Jamaica didn't make as much sense to me back then as they do now.

There are at least five albums which I can recommend to anyone who's not particular into Bollywood music and movies but into funky music in general:

Bombay the Hard Way, Vol. 1: Guns Cars & Sitars/Soundtracks from 1970's Indian Cinema Mixed By DJ Shadow

Bombay the Hard Way, Vol. 2: Electric Vindaloo

The song titles in the "Bombay the Hard Way" series are very cute - my favorites include "The Good, The Bad And The Chutney", "Ganges A Go-Go", "Fist Of Curry", "Punjabis, Pimps & Players", "Fear Of A Brown Planet", "Uptown Bollywood Nights", "Theme From Twin Sheiks", "Hydrolik Carpet Ride", "Basmati Beatdown", "Dil Street Blues", and "Chakra Khan". Prince and Bollywood fans should also love ""Sexy Mother Fakir". ;-)

Bollywood Funk

The Bombay Connection, Vol. 1: Funk From Bollywood Action Thrillers

Bombay Connection, Vol. 2: Bombshell Baby of Bombay: Bouncin' Nightclub Grooves...

i have been looking for Om Shanti Om on google & found a few clips.. it looks good, great songs too. i am just a beginer at hollywood movies yet. my faves right now are "lage raho munnabhai", "big brother" & "dhoom". going to look for a torrent for those 2 movies you recommended. thanks a bunch, pj.

I had no idea about the vocal being lifted from a Hindi movie.

Mind you, the riddim is played by the Gladiators and is a version of their "Dreadlocks The Time Is Now"/"Roots Natty", no.

Brilliant spot on the vocal
