I suppose there are a lot of bands that I could say "changed my life" in my formative years...Devo, Sex Pistols, REM, The Clash, Gang Of Four, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, X, The Replacements, The Smiths, Dream Syndicate, Husker Du, etc, etc...but there's probably no band that holds a higher place in my personal pantheon than The Minutemen...the first time I heard them, it was like a revelation...pure and true...fast and furious..and it stuck...boy did it ever...they were punk rock without the "fashion"...without the clique...just a group of guys making music...fucking with the system...fucking with the idea of what a band looked, sounded and acted like..."these guys were like Dylan to me"...indeed...and live? are you kidding me?...they were amazing...and an incredibly nice bunch of guys to boot...
If you have not seen We Jam Econo, the documentary from which the above clip was taken, I could not recommend it enough.
And of course, Micheal Azerad's book, Our Band Could be Your Life, is a must read. I bought it for the chapter on The Minutemen alone...it was the most in depth account of the band and their history I had ever seen in print...and it was well worth it...the rest of the book is amazing as well...but hopefully you already knew that...

haha, i love the attacking cat that comes outta nowhere! stuff like this is so much more watchable when it's not a thread that's found it's way into my email inbox...is that just a me thing?
In considering my "best of 2007" list, I spent a disproportionate, and some would say ridiculous, amount of time considering how many entries I should include. 10 never seems to be enough. 40-50 just seems obnoxious. 20 would have meant that I had to make some very difficult cuts.
FWIW, my 25 favorite recordings of 2007, in no particular order:
Magik Markers - Boss
Celebration - The Modern Tribe
No Age - Weirdo Rippers
Caribou - Andorra
Oakley Hall - I'll Follow You
The National - The Boxer
Bruce Springsteen - Magic
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
The Rosebuds - Night Of The Furies
Yeasayer - All Hour Cynbals
Okervil River - The Stage Names
Bill Callahan - Woke On A Whaleheart
Band Of Horses - Cease To Begin
Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil
Mum - Go Smear The Poison Ivy
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Low - Drums & Guns
The Broken West - I Can't Go On, I'll Go On
The Clientele - God Save The Clientele
Iron & Wine - The Shepard's Dog
Thurston Moore - Trees Outside The Academy
Modeselektor - Happy Birthday
Shout Out Louds - Our Ill Wills
Akron/Family - Love Is Simple
Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
hmmm....

something tells me i should really think about listening to okervil river. they come up as suggestions in relation to what else i have or bought off itunes or whatnot all the time. plus, they're on countless year-end lists.
The Okervil River record really grew on me...did not grab me on first listen...but once it "clicked", I was hooked...some really amazing songs...Will Sheff is a talented storyteller...the live show has practically put me to sleep a couple of times though...ouch...

oooh that boring live, huh? part of the reason i haven't gotten any of their albums is because i'm thinking that maybe it just won't click for me. guess i'll have to get it when i'm feeling particularly patient!

Ill video clip! Is that from a movie of the same name or something? Tell me thre's more! :)
The film is called We Jam Econo...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Jam_Econo...it's available from Netflix, and I'm sure some of your hipper video stores...I thought it was pretty amazing...but then again I'm biased...I think all three of these videos are featured in the film...the first one definitely is...hence the interview footage with Mike Watt...
