So I am a fan of the cello rock. Yes, the cello rock. As in rock band with a cello. Seen it with Andrew Bird - great. Seen it with Alejandro Escovedo - great. Seen it with Portland locals Bright Red Paper - also great.
They seem to be playing somewhere in Portland at least once a week. Sometimes playing quieter mellower shows and sometimes playing electric rocking shows. The short CD they recently released kind of splits the difference. You won't be seeing or hearing a lead singer - nor will you be missing one. They remind me of that Chicago art rock / art pop sound - but more melodic and less abrasive. Check 'em out www.brightredpaper.com.
Flute rock - different story.

My Trusted MOGs
It's not cello rock, but Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, which played very cool latin jazz, featured cello pretty heavily. Eu e o Meu Amor contains an incredible cello solo.
