Broken Bloc Party Scene
So Bloc Party and Broken Social Scene played the Greek Theater in L.A. last night, and over all it was pretty good. The thing about this whole "beeing on the cutting edge" of music is you get totally spoiled seeing these great bands in small venues before they blow up (i.e. Bloc Party at the Glasshouse, BSS at the Fonda). First things first though...$40 for valet parking...TOTALLY worth it. To be able to just walk out of the show and not wait for everyone else to leave stack parking is great. Anyway. Traffic was of course terrible - you think after a while we would learn to adjust and leave early - so we missed Mew. Any good? I had heard some positive things beforehand. The dissappointment for me was Broken Social Scene. #1 - no Feist. She brings an energy that the band sorely lacked. Which leads to #2 - the tempo was noticedly subdued, which made them feel more like a jam band than the indie rock heavyweights they are. It made you realize how important the energy is to not just their live show but to the material as well. A big meh for me. Saw the guys from OK Go getting hot dogs. They were constantly beseiged by jailbait hipsters. Anyway. Bloc Party, despite persistent technical problems, rocked the non-existent roof off of the place. New songs sounded great too, one with a very Futureheds-y vibe (which I wholly endorse). Great moment near the end of the set when during "Price of Gas", after his guitar went dead, Kele throws it off and goes into the crowd. After he gets back to the stage, something like 30 people get past security and full the stage. Never seen anything like it. In the end, a very enjoyable show at a surprisingly great venue. Good hot dogs too. Anyway.
