WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

reading High Fidelity

Posted over 2 years ago
Well ... my first mog post ... This is hard to do. Can I have a week or so to think about it?I just finished reading High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. This is a must read for moggers. In fact MOG is the natual evolutionary step from High Fidelity. One of the quotes on the back cover "Excellent, funny first novel ... the book that no music-snobs sould be without".High Fidelity is the story of Rob who owns a record store in London and has just been dumped by his girl friend. His life is a mess. Rob (and Dick and Barry) define their life through music. Rob judges new friends by their records and CDs. Rob and his employees are obsessed with making mixed tapes and top 5 lists of all kinds. The climax of Rob's life is being asked by a reporter for his five favorite records of all time. "All my life I have been waiting for this moment, and when it comes I can hardly believe it: I feel unprepared, caught short. ... Can I go home and work it out and let you know?" After much second guessing Rob's list is done. As Rob's number one song says Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye.

  1. chucky says Welcome , welcome. I've never read High Fidelity, I've just seen the movie. I think about reading it, then I wonder if not hearing music will detract from it.

  4. ScottyB says Welcome to Mog! Hornby is fantastic - Heir to Kingsley Amis though Amis never wrote about music as such... Have you read 31 Songs? If you liked High Fidelity, I suspect you'll like 31 Songs as well... Enjoy Life In The Mogos!
