The answer is, yeah, Lucinda's all right (sorry, I'm an English major, I had to correct it). Despite the passing of her mother, and the conclusion of a tumultuous relationship, she’s learning how to live without two important people in her life. The album deals with some sad stuff, but ultimately it’s uplifting, and her songwriting is as good as always. It may not surpass Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, but only a handful of albums in the world do. There’s a funky song on there that doesn’t fit in with this album, though it springs from some directions explored on World Without Tears, like “Sweet Side†and “Righteously,†both of which I like, and “American Dream,†which I find overbearing. The song, “Wrap My Head Around That†comes across as repetitive. The lyrics are highly stylized, but lack the emotional investment she puts into “Mama You Sweet†and “Fancy Funeral.†But as “Spin†magazine says, “Let those [few sub-par] parts slide into the ocean and enjoy the remaining hour of perfectly golden brilliance†[Feb 2007, p.89].Her vocal performances are stellar. I read in No Depression last month that producer Hal Willner used many scratch vocal tracks, as well as her own guitar playing, which together work to make a more satisfying cadence to her lyrics. They just seem to fit in with the vibe of the music better than World Without Tears. If you’re an old Lucinda fan, you probably already have this disc. If you don’t have any of her work, buy this one along with Car Wheels, and hear one of the absolute best singer/songrwriters that alt.country has to offer.
