WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Music composition/writing etc. Pt. 1

Posted over 3 years ago
In recent months, I have been trying to get more involved with guitar playing. It is a little difficult between work and studying, because it does require a lot of focus. It is also difficult if you have little or no desire to play because there is no motivation. Now that I am part of a community that is based upon music, not just likes and dislikes of artists/bands but also, musicians themselves, I hope to learn more from people here. I also have a couple of friends that I can practice with, so I have a variation of being motivated. I am going to start on a little series about creating. What I would like to first ask of people here on MOG, particularly musicians/composers/writers, where do you start (ex. lyrics, music composition)? Is there a particular order in which you create music or does it really matter?

  1. tybees says I used to write a lot more than I do now, but I'd usually come up with a chord progression first and work out a good melody or two on top of it. I'd sing gibberish until actual coherent lyrics came out (one or two lines that made sense together) and then write the rest of the lyrics around that idea. I find it difficult to write the lyrics first and then try to write the music.

  2. KebStarr says Well, when my cousin and I work on beats, we start by going to work on a case of beer. When that's half done, we start messing around with his keyboard effing around with different patterns. Then we drink more, and start working with his computer programs, and he'll either do a bass or drum sample. Then we'll sample some records or something, and the beat is finished. And then we'll start writing the lyrics. By the time that's done we'll sing the song completely pissed, fall asleep and wake up in the morning, realizing how drunk and horrible we were. Therefore, all good compositions begin with alcohol ;)

  5. bubb says Stone Temple Pilots were Awesome. 'Interstate Love Song' from 'Purple' is another classic as well, my favorite song by STP for that matter!.................. STP was the best straight-ahead rock singles outfit of their time. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

  6. RGM says I would Simply suggest, for song writing a recording device like a small hand held tape recorder or even you cell phone if you have a recording option, for lyrics always carry a small notebook pocket size pad and pen, if you loose pad find andthing and write on it and shove it in your pocket, also hum you Ideas to youself and on your recording device for later. Then later play them on your or any instrument, learn your notation values as far as count values at least, get yourself a music pocket dictionary, take a vocal class if you can, not to be a singer, but to be comfterable with humming or singing intervals, notation is great, but ear training is an invauble tool, if you don't get thoughs books check this one out I got the Bass Version and It's Great! 101 Guitar Tips All the Pros Know and Use, for theory get Data-Guide Quick Charts (Essentials Of Music) A two Sided Card of Theory.
