Tonight with the Teens

Posted over 4 years ago
I have a son who is 14 and he rocks. I mean, literally, with a drum kit and a guitar and sometimes the bass, etc. etc. I have taken him to many shows, exposed him to much music and although I do not play an instrument, I feel I have played my part in his musical upbringing. That said, this weekend he came to my house and brought a friend. This guy is also around 14 and he plays guitar-they are in a band together and talk and share a lot about music.I wanted to take them to a show. Sure, I knew the main reason the friend came up this weekend was to see his girlfriend who lives in Northampton but I still wanted to take the guys to a show. Obviously it had to be all ages. I considered Girlyman at the Iron Horse just because I couldn't find anything else. There is a pop music fest going on all weekend at the 11s but it is 21+. Argh. Then, on Thursday I read in the good ol' Advocate that Yo La Tengo was playing at Mass MoCA on Saturday. Just the thing. The guys never heard Yo La Tengo before. They have heard the name, I guess and they came along willingly but without much enthusiasm but it was obvious they were game. good. Dredd Foole opened the night and I won't even go into how the crowd "enjoyed" his set. My son said, after Dredd Foole was gone and we waited for Ira, Georgia and James to take the stage, "I hope this makes up for that guy." I gestured at the sold out crowd. "I'm sure all these people didn't come for Mr. Foole."The band came on and Sal asked, "Is that all of them?" and then, after the first song ended, turned to me and said, "These guys are awesome."Done and done.
