WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

The Aerovons "Resurrection"

Posted about 1 year ago
Plenty of Brits have tried to soften their accents or sing without them but it's a little strange when Americans put on British accents to sing.
Like another American, Emitt Rhodes, the Aerovons were apparently infatuated with replicating McCartney like vocals. Hell, they even recorded these songs at Abbey Road and copped(stole?) a few ideas from current in progress Beatles songs(The released a single eerily similar to "Oh Darling").
Until 2003, when "Resurrection" was released, the only Aerovons material that had seen the light of day were a few singles, all in '69. Why they didn't release an album back then is a mystery because "Resurrection" makes it sound like they had plenty of material recorded.
So for those interested in hearing some American's trying their hand at Macca-esque songwriting here you go:

  2. FastRMacR says Capt. Gee Bee and the Abbey White Peppers! Almost like I've heard these before - so much cover of the Fab sound circa '66-'68. 1, 2 I could swear that was Ringo's kit and John's piano as well. "Song for Jane" sounds from Rubber Soul. I can hear "Till There Was You" with "Across The Universe" somewhere there. I just love "The Years" tune .. very nice..they're all very nice ... strawberry nice. Many thanks for the post!

  4. dermahrk says Thanks, Shins! I bought this CD a couple of years ago based on the back-story alone. A couple of tracks have survived on the iPod, and it's great that you've brought their story to MOG.

  5. vannatta says Do the Brits think that their own - putting on an American accent, sounds just as weird... ? I wonder... any Brits on here...? Do you guys enjoy the British Accent from an American Band...?

  6. Bartleby says I think Brits put on a Yankee accent because of a complex of inferiority. After all, their models all hailed from the US of A, be it the blues or soul... I've never heard of The Aerovons but there are undoubtedly echoes of Paul than any one else in the tracks presented here. Thanks Shins.

  7. Girlcrawl says Appreciate the post; was not aware of the Aerovons. Concur with Bartleby's observation regarding the most apparent 'echoes' being that of Paul. Would have been interesting to hear what these guys would have created had they not focused on emulating their influences so prominently. Cheers.
