United States of America / Final Fantasy

Posted over 2 years ago

I don’t know if Owen Pallet, of Final Fantasy, is influenced by the psychedelic band The United States of America. Actually there’s only one song off of USOA’s sole LP which sounds akin to the music of Final Fantasy. This song, “Stranded in Time,” features familiar Final Fantasy instrumentation, violin and cello, and even adds that old baroque stand by, the harpsichord. The lyrics also feel similiar, offering a melancholic if pretentious slice of life, “Time when he and mother where young, now those days are departed, now he’s left broken hearted, stranded in time.”

Besides this song, more obvious influences for Mr. Pallet include Scott Walker and other baroque pop outfits. I bring this up because some music fans of current artists don’t know who preceded them(like how Devendra Banhart owes a lot to pre-glam Mark Bolan and Donavan) and also because this USOA song sounds totally unlike their other output.(more songs in comments section)

  2. dermahrk says I've heard of The United State Of America - read some interesting reviews or articles but never heard the band, so it was nice to finally hear some. Final Fantasy? At first, I thought you must be talking about some video game (see, I have a GREAT grip on the past, it's the present that gets kinda fuzzy...)...BONUS! I ended up liking both.

  3. shinsaholic says I first saw Final Fantasy on tour with Arcade Fire a few years ago. Seeing the name on the bill I didn't know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised.
