You know... most people don't choose their music. People and executive boards high up in the record industry choose rappers/artists out of the masses to be groomed for radio and television exposure. They decide who comes up, and who does not. Take for example the Black Eyed Peas. The lyrics of their most recent songs are laughable at best and there are thousands of unknown artists who could outshine them easily... yet they are on my radio. The best rapper alive might live next door to me, but no one will never know because he or she lacks _access_ to the masses.
There is this documentary from Frontline called Merchants of Cool. It's about the media in general, but touches on music a little. For the record this documentary changed my life, as far as my understanding of "socially acceptable" and the meaning of "cool." It's a little old (it's hard to keep up with the youth) and it doesn't directly target my culture, but it's definately still relevant and I think these people make more money off of us (African Americans) then anyone else. You can watch it online in segments, but I suggest you get that DVD, it's worth it.

Cool, I'll check this out. I've been thinking the same things these days - Paris Hilton does have an album out now...
