WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Not the Best of Minnie Riperton

Posted over 2 years ago
The post below this one speaks ambiguously about an album of bests without the best. I was going to leave it at that, but the song is so good I decided I needed to bring it up again. The artist is Minnie Riperton, you might know her from that song _Lovin' You._ (Is easy 'cause you're beautiful, etc.) The song that I think should be on the "Best Of" album is _Every Time He Comes Around_. This song sounds like it was _made_ for the summer, and it's guaranteed to have a decent amount of playing time in my headphones/speakers for the next couple of months.

  6. mousetrap says Wow...this tune really spun my head around! Forgive me, Minnie! I dismissed you way back in the '70s because of the hypoglycemic confection that was Lovin' You. And for me, unlike a lot of people who I think were turned off by her coloratura soprano riffing, that actually wasn't what put me off my feed - it was those damn birds. You know the ones I mean. Tweeting away in the background like....well, like what? Like she was shooting a feminine hygiene commercial rather than singing a song? But I digress... Loved the fat, fuzzy, unmistakably '70s guitar tone on this tune, and I was almost surprised by its adventurousness in the fills between vocal lines. I was going to ask if you knew who the guitarist was, then realized that I could look it up as easily as anyone else. Turns out it's "Michael Sembello":http://www.michaelsembello.com, who later had a bona fide hit with the odious Maniac from the "Flashdance" soundtrack. But I seem to remember some rather frantic and fuzzy guitar histrionics in the fading seconds of that song as well...
