WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

My response to Atman's favorite cover

Posted over 2 years ago
  • Artist:
John Tutor, Eric Gales, Alvin Youngblood Hart
  • Album:
    Whole Lotta Blues
  • Track:
    Custard Pie (Revisited)
Same song, different artists. This is part of the House of Blues series, each disc devoted to a different artist (in this case, Led Zeppelin). There are others based on the music of Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith, and Janis Joplin.

  1. atman says very cool! Talk about gritty! I think most Zep fans know that this is actually an old blues song which Page and Plant didn't actually write (even though the writing credits on the album were "Robert Plant/Jimmy Page". In a week or so when my emusic downloads rollover I'm gonna have to look for an early early recording of this.

  2. sedagive says Yeah, they got sued by WIllie Dixon (he won). They also copied Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. I've never understood what they were up to - they clearly loved the music they were copying - but maybe that's why the above-referenced album has the subtitle, "This Ain't No Tribute." It used to be a lot of people didn't even understand what Blues were, or where this incredible music came from. Nowadays, I think there is a lot more awareness of the Blues and its influence on modern music. All the best Rock, IMO, comes from there, whether it's Led Zeppelin, Clutch, or Black Sabbath. BTW, there is a much more basic, guitar-and-vocal version of Custard Pie on this album as well as a smokin' version of "When the Levee Breaks."
