I never understood why Bill Ward took so much flack for his drumming...

  1. atman says Bill Ward is/was on par with Bohnam as far as his impact goes. He was huge. Nothing wrong with his drumming.

  2. sedagive says Well, I'm with you. I think he got really bad reviews in his early days (along with the rest of the band) , and worked extra hard to compensate. But even the early stuff is fantastic - just listen to War Pigs. He was of the Keith Moon school of drumming in many ways - somewhat experimental, treating the drums as an instrument on par with the guitar and bass, rather than just something to keep rhythm.

  3. atman says yeah, Keith Moon is much more apropos than Bonham. Heavy and sloppy. More groove. Bohnam had a weird metronome vibe with crazy offbeat shit.

  4. sedagive says It hink it's important to keep in mind that both Sabbath and Zeppelin, like a lot of other Brit bands of the time, were heavily into Blues. Heck, Sabbath was a Blues band before they found their sound!
