WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Scrubs

Posted over 2 years ago
Ok, this is my first post on here and since I'm not really a "blogger", I hope it's not a total waste. I just wanted to throw out a tip for music lovers: Scrubs is not only a great TV show, but it's a great source for new music.I think Zach Braff is probably the force behind the music on the show (since it's very similar to his excellent soundtrack for Garden State). The show amazes me time and again how it can go from completely oddball, crazy humor to punch-in-the-gut drama in a second. And the music is a huge part of that. A lot of shows now are following the same model, where they're using new music from lesser known artists, which I love, but I've never seen a show consistently do it as well as Scrubs. A few artists I've discovered on the show: Joshua Radin, Cary Brothers, Colin Hay, and the Fray.So that's what I wanted to say.

  1. garrick says Colin Hay! Makes you wanna buy up old Men at Work records and re-listen for the songwriting, eh?

  2. seble24 says Ha, yeah. He was actually in an episode where he was just hanging around with his guitar and he would randomly start following someone around and play a song while he was walking.

  4. ChiaraSera says Welcome to Mog, hope you like it here. Grey's Anatomy is also a very good place to find some good music. They play a lot of indie bands, especially those with female vocalists like Rilo Kiley and Tegan and Sara.

  5. Manos says I agree. He must have a standard contract clause or something, because the soundtrack for The Last Kiss has Braff written all over it and all he did was act in that one.

  6. ScottyB says Welcome! I think the O.C actually started the trend of playing cool music to keep people coming back even when the plot started to die like a plant in a bachelor apartment... But - Wow! - Men at work...Just - WOW! I'm truly at a loss for words...

  9. Brett Schieber says I completely agree. Zach Braff has great taste in music, apparently. Don't forget that he also says that he likes Remy Zero and Jump, Little Children - two of my favorite bands!

  10. that1guy says The song Colin Hay is playing in that episode is called Overkill. That particular episode turned me on to Hay's solo acoustic career. Even though I have some respect for Mr. Braff left, I think he's worn out his welcome. I loved earlier episodes of Scrubs and thought Garden State was extremely well done. Zach Braff described himself as the voice of his generation. I don't agree.

  12. chucky says Ah I see that1guy beat me to it...I actually did go out and buy a Men At Work greatest hits album trying to get that song. $16 bucks and a little research later and I found out it was from his solo career. Heh. You're right about Scrubs. Even better than the music itself, is the way they work it into the show. Welcome!

  13. that1guy says Chucky - I also think that's why Garden State was so good, it wasn't so much the movie but how they worked the music into it.

  14. chucky says You know, I barely remember Garden State. I do remember going to see it because I thought it was going to be a funny movie and I remember that it wasn't. Yeah, I am almost completely unimpressed by Zach Braff. My props go to the minds behind Scrubs. He gets props for working the music into the scenes so perfectly, but that's all. I don't want him writing, or producing, or whatever it was he did with Garden State. Heh.

  15. El Monko and Son says Welcome to MOG, dude. I am also a huge fan of Scrubs, and have been since the start of the second season, and very much enjoy Garden State (I own it). But credit for the music stuff goes to the show's producer. I can't remember the guy's name, but I read an interview with him in Rolling Stone wherein he talked about the music selection process, and even laughingly talked about how he is pissed at Braff for stealing the Shins from him after he introduced Braff to them. It seems to be a case of Braff carrying on with his producer's influence.

  17. seble24 says I love Scrubs and I really liked Garden State too, even though it's completely different tone from Scrubs. I haven't seen Last Kiss yet.

  18. Wozniak says I guess I'll be the Black Sheep and say that I really don't like Zach Braff's taste. It's fun for the show, but it's nothing I'll go chase down just because of him. Besides, everybody knows the Dr. Cox is a closet music snob.

  20. haggardpilot says I love Scrubs. I love Garden State. I love Zach Braff. if someone wanted to call me a Zach Braff fangirl, I would have no problems with it or feel any shame. now Daniel, I did see the Last Kiss (and actually bought the DVD). it's an interesting one. I totally, totally understand why so many people say they hated it. sometimes I hate it too. but most of the time I love it. it's not even so much the script, but the actors. every performance in the movie is so fucking outstanding and realistic. some of the script is pretty incredible because you're like "holy shit I have HAD that arguement, I have SAID those things to the person I love(d)". I think that's why I loved it so much. it's just real.

  21. rweyh04 says I like Braff's musical choices and feel commercials do alot for music as well as shows and movies. I was not a fan of Garden State though, it had nothing to keep me interested.

  22. Frenzy48 says yes! i absolutley agree with you. the show is amazing, and i have gotten on limewire a number of times specifically looking for tunes from scrubs :)

  23. starmile says Just a crazy random fact, Joshua Radin, Zach Braff and the Cary brothers all went to college together. Yep- Josh told me himself. By the way- anyone listening to Shuyler Fisk (Josh's opening at his last show and his girlfriend)- she is amazing!
